oracle discs used for data storage
Hi everyone,
I have a new oracle 11r2 server on rhel 6.5.
os discs look like this:
/dev/xvda1 ext4 /
/dev/xvdc1 ext3 /tmp
/dev/mapper/vg-u01 ext4 /u01
/dev/mapper/vg2-u02 ext4 /u02
I alos have 3 tb of discs, which will be used with oracleasm that I am unfamiliar with. the data will be imported to those discs which hold all of the existing oracle database records.
My question is how should those discs be formatted, ext4 I assume ?
or does oracleasm handle this, and the discs should be left as raw devices perhaps?
Thank you!

Never mind, I answered my own question I made them all primary

next I'm labeling all the discs
/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA1 /dev/xvdj1
/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA2 /dev/xvdk1
/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA3 /dev/xvdl1
/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA4 /dev/xvdm1
/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA5 /dev/xvdn1
/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA1 /dev/xvdj1

Now I need to configure RAW devices for RHEL 6.5 and am stuck.
Is this article correct in it's configuration?
http://www.oracleflash.com/7/How-to-configure-Raw-Disks-in-RHEL-5.html
I realize it's for rhel 5 for it seems to be correct in terms of directories....
the other article was this one, but it's depreciated in terms of raw devices..

I may have answered my own question again, if you are going to use asmlib you don't need to do the raw device mappings, the rest of the configuration is done from within oracle. I will update this post in case I find anything different.
well its great then.. you are giving questions and answering them on your own.. till i find something for
you..
was just searching the site with steps for asm which you may refer in case of need..

it seems you are going good.. well then ., its my time to log off..!! good luck..!!!

LOL, thank you
Here's a very condensed oracle asm lib disk config procedure:
Fdisk all the discs......
fdisk /dev/xvdj
n, p, 1, enter, enter, t, 83 [linux], p, w
Repeat the above step for all disks
/etc/init.d/oracleasm configure
Default user to own the driver interface [oracle]:
Default group to own the driver interface [dba]: <<<<<double check this group may be oinstall
Start Oracle ASM library driver on boot (y/n) [y]:
Scan for Oracle ASM disks on boot (y/n) [y]:
Writing Oracle ASM library driver configuration: done
Initializing the Oracle ASMLib driver: [ OK ]
Scanning the system for Oracle ASMLib disks: [ OK ]
Label the disks as ASM disks and give then an ASM name.
EXAMPLE
/etc/init.d/oracleasm createdisk DATA1 /dev/xvdj1
Repeat the above step for all disks
Issue a scandisks on all ASM disks.
/etc/init.d/oracleasm scandisks
listsdisks will list all ASM disks. Make sure you see all the disks you configured.
/etc/init.d/oracleasm listdisks
This article is pretty much spot on. You will for oracle asm OR udev, on or the other but not both.

your question was to format the disks or not while doing configuration and I think it was well answered??
though you linked various questions in one question and have answered them own, this doesn't mean that the original one went unanswered..!!
so you cannot close the question accepting your own answer..!!
please close it appropriately..!!
