Oracle Database servers. troubleshooting performance and common issues

Hi Experts,

We do have an Oracle 11G.  Most of them are running on solaris 10 hardware.  Most of out Linux server are on VMware

Can anybody provide with some documents to troubleshoot performance issues on Oracle database servers?

Does anybody of a capacity planning tool free to also identify the ideal infrastructure for Oracle servers in Solaris and Linux?

Your feedback is greatly appreciated

"...some documents to troubleshoot performance issues on Oracle database servers?"
Numerous books have been published on this topic.  Oracle and other training organizations offer multi-day and/or multi-week training courses on this subject.  Many consulting organizations make a living providing this service.

And you want us to give you just a couple links that will get you all of that information easily?  That is not possible.

"..identify the ideal infrastructure for Oracle servers in Solaris and Linux?"
Ideal for what?  What is your goal?
1. Is that maximum performance?  Then get the biggest machines you can find.
2. Is that lowest cost?  Then get the smallest machines you can find.
3. Is that most reliability?  Then get two or three mid-sized machines and set up a cluster.
4. Is it some combination of performance, cost and reliability?  Which is most important to you?

This reminds me of a quote I heard once regarding work: "how would you like the job to done: fast, cheap or well - pick two."  You can get any combination of two of those three, but you can't get all three together.
Did you check out the fine Oracle® Database Performance Tuning Guide?

No need to be so rude Markgeer, not sure what is your background but you should be more polite since you are providing a service online. I would ask your manager or whoever run this site, if people like you are not destroying the reputation of this site

Just a thought

btw, Mike thanks for that link. At least is a good start
I'm sorry, I wasn't trying to be rude.  It just seemed that your question was very broad (not specific).  For example, this topic: "troubleshoot performance issues on Oracle database servers" is a very broad topic.  There isn't just one thing to check for this.  This can involve: the server O/S, the storage system, the network or SAN connection to the storage, the database initialization parameters. the amount of memory in the server, the time of day or week, etc.

And, your question about: "the ideal infrastructure for Oracle servers in Solaris and Linux" is impossible for us to answer, unless you explain what "ideal" means to you.  We have no idea: how many users your system needs to support, how large your database is now, how fast you expect the database to grow, what kind of application this is (transaction-processing or data warehouse), etc.  We also don't know what is most important to you.  Is that performance, cost, reliability, etc.?
