The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Hiding the Parameter in Crystal Reports XI Release 2

Tags: Business Objects, Crystal Reports, XI R2
I have been using SSRS for a while, but Crystal Reports is new to me.
In SSRS, to hide a parameter we just have to clear the Promt text along with providing a default value. But in Crystal Reports how?

All I want is to hide a parameter so that the user is not prompted to enter a value for that parameter (though he is allowed to enter values for the other parameters). I want this to be done in Crystal Report Designer, not at other application level.

Could some one please provide a solution for this. Please let me know if i'm not clear.

Thanks in Advance,
Srinivas

In crystal and BOE, if you have a parameter on the report it will prompt the user.  The only way to get rid of it is to remove it from the report.

Agree.  You could use the application to prompt for the parameters and pass avalue for the one you don't want.

What is the parameter used for?  If the report uses the parameter then you need a value for it.  If you can set a default value why not simply hard code it or use a variable.

I'm using the QAAWS as the data source, on which i don't have any control. This is having the parameters like username, password, itemtype. we are creating a similar report for each item, so i want to create one single report, make copies of it, and do the required changes to each copy along with passing the proper itemtype to each report. These are not the parameters that i created in the report, but coming from QAAWS.
Also, I don't want to prompt the user to enter the username-password every time (or i can say at no time).

If your report does not contain any subreports, then you may be able to work around this by turning your current report into a subreport and running it from a "shell" report (which would be basically empty, except for the subreport).  The "shell" report would accept the parameters and pass them on to the subreport, but instead of a username parameter, it would have a formula with the username in it, which it would pass to the username parameter in the subreport.  Note that the "shell" report may have to read something (a table or whatever).  I experimented with this idea a bit and the subreport did not actually produce any output unless the "shell" report read at least one record from somewhere.  In my case, I just picked a small table, stuck a field from it on the "shell" report and suppressed the details, etc.

If your report contains subreports, then this idea probably won't work.  CR 10 does not allow subreports to contain subreports.  I don't know if CR XI has the same limitation.

Thanks James for a quick reply. I don't have any sub reports as of now. But still... the user need to provide the username/password and other parameters to execute the 'Shell' report, right?

Because the parameter is part of the stored proc within the database, and you said that can not be modified, your users will have to fill this parameter in. At the very least you can set it to a defaul for them and train them not to modify it.

As far as not prompting the user for username and password.  If you are using BOE, there is an adminsitrative interface called the CMC.  Navigate to the report and do to prompts/database and fill in the username and password.  Make sure that the check box "prompt user for username and password" is unchecked.

The idea was to have formulas in the shell report with the username and password hard-coded into them.  The shell report would have all of the other parameters, but not those.  The parameters in the shell report would be linked to the corresponding parameters in the subreport and those formulas would be linked to the remaining parameters in the subreport.

However, wykabryan may be onto something.  I haven't used QAAWS, but maybe there is a way to tell it not to prompt the users for the name and password, as he suggested.
