Question

Strange CR8 and VB6SP5 runtime installation on WinXP

Asked by: ispaleny

I went into problems with Seagate Crystal Reports 8.0 Developer Edition and VB6SP5 RUNTIME installation.

Win9x ... Nothing special, I was able to use the standard Visual Basic 6.0 Installer
Win2K ... Problems with installation in the Windows registry. Solved by use of MS VS Installer 1.1
WinXP ... Extensive problems with the registry. CR is not running.

I tried to solve it by applying a 4/2003 CR8 hotfixes. And the result: one developer's computer (mine :P) is not able to open some reports, an installation created doesn't produce CR exports on Win9x.

CR8 was developed before Win XP and has not been thoroughly tested on that platform.  Also Crystal is dropping support for CR8 as of June 2003.

mlmcc,
Thanks for your fast reply. My time is GMT+1, I posted this question when I was leaving an office on Friday, that's why I was not able to reply immediately. In your profile I see you are using the same development platform as we do. How did you solve it, did you move up to CR9?

I think Crystal dropped the support for CR8 a year ago. From that time exists the most stable installation with functional exports. I have no idea how they can fix 12 minor issues and create 20 really big bugs now. Did they change the developing team?

The problems with W2K and WXP I am able to solve manually with help of Regmon. I just don't know why these problems with the registry are related to CR8 only. Must I setup something in an installer to prevent it from setting LocalSystem owner in the registry only? Or do you know some utility to fix it automatically? The utility provided by Crystal is fixing an original CR8 DE installation (the same problem, but with DSN in the registry).

Recommended setting for the Windows registry

I am not a Windows system programmer, but I am ready to study this area, if there is no other way :)

Actually from the message I just got it is this Jun (at least in the US).

We haven't had the problem yet.  We are still running Win 95.  We are in the process of upgrading to a tightly secured Win2K.  Users will not even be allowed to save files to their harddrive.  We are using Win Installer to build the installation package.  We also build it on our Win 2K machine since there are differences in some of the dlls.

You might consider building the application and the install package on a Win XP machine.  or You might install the full CR on a Win XP machine and see if you can get it to work.  Obviously you will have to uninstall it later.

I hope we don't go to Win XP anytime soon.

mlmcc,

It is the right time to close this question, it is an abandoned version.
Thanks for your interest.
