Question

Web deployment issues for CERAS 9

Asked by: bstein002

When deploying reports to both internal as well as external users, the total number of the user base can reach 10,000 or more.  If one assumes a realistic service capacity for peak hours to be around 5% - 10% of the user population, that can lead to hundreds of process requests within a relatively short time span.  Considering then, that CERAS standard comes out of the box with Crystal 9 Advanced edition with 3 active user licenses, what sort of licensing deployment would be appropriate to handle large traffic volumes?

A different angle on the same question; how many active users (commonly known as "threads" to the rest of us), can be concurrently serviced if a processor license is used?  Is there a linear or exponential growth in number of serviceable threads when moving to dual or quad processors?

We've been haunted by Crystal's unecessarily complicated and ambiguous licensing scheme for some time now, when in reality, all we'd like to know is, how much is enough?

In my understanding, 3 licenses allows 3 users to be viewing a report at the same time or 1 user to be viewing 3 reports.  I believe as long as they have the report open the license is tied up.

If you expect up to 1000 simultaneous users then I expect 3 licenses will not be enough.

I am not familiar with how CERAS works or handles the licenses since we have chosen to present the reports via other methds thus avoiding most of Crystals license issues.

I guess the real question is whatconstitutes an active user?  Is it a user who displays a report then moves on to other things without closing the report? or is that user only active when the data & report are built (once displayed the license is free until he moves to the next page)?

An active user is defined by Crystal as one process request, for example a report execution, a drilldown or some other function in which the CERAS app server must address the request.  10 users logged in concurrently will only be serviced 3 requests at a time, while any request beyond will be cached until a new "thread" opens up.

1. So the question is, in order to service 1000 "Real" users, how many "Active" users (or threads) are necessary?
2. How many active users can be handled with a "processor license?

Take a look at this newletter and others published after.
In the nutshell, 3 requests can be active, rest is queed up in RAS.

The licensing is for 3 concurrent threads, not users.  A thread is defined as database access and page rendering.  Any process which makes a call to the viewer or the database will use a thread.  Only CR9 Advanced will do page queuing and cacheing and I recommend it as an ABSOLUTE minimum.  You really should have a processor based advanced license or Enterprise professional.  Both of these options will be COSTLY.
