Question

"server has not yet been opened" Crystal 8.5 & VB6 App.

Asked by: Muratti

VB application to view crystal reports.

Reports are connected to their data through ODBC File Dsn. File Dsn is looking at text files.

In the VB code, I am not passing the dsn name, database location or anything like this. Because my assumption is that, these are inherited in the report. So when VB opens the report, the report itself should find its data.

in the project references I have:

Crystal Report viewer control (crviewer.oca)
Crystal Report viewer control (crviewer.dll)
Crystal Reports 8.5 ActiveX Designer Run time library (craxdrt.dll)

The application works on the developer machine and one client computer (which has crystal reports installed). On another computer with no crystal reports, it says "Server has not yet been opened".

I believe, I installed all the dlls to client machine.

the databases are also verified, they are up to date.
Save data with report is unchecked.

and i could not find something to help me in cr_server_not_yet_been_opened on crystal website.

Can anyone help me with this pls?

Is the ODBC data source designated on the client machine?

by: gian_the_manPosted on 2003-09-17 at 13:28:34ID: 9381408

This could be a permissions issue which prevents other computers to access the data on the server. Are there any differences between the user rights on the different workstations you've tested?
Are you using the Crystal Web Component Server or ASP pages?

by: MurattiPosted on 2003-09-17 at 13:32:22ID: 9381435

The ODBC file dsn is sitting on the server. It is in nobody's machine. The text files, the ODBC is looking at are also in the server.

So the reports are connected to the FILE DSN sitting in the server, which connects to text files sitting in the server.

The security permissions are the same for each computer.

I am not using web comp. server or ASP.

thanks.

Muratti:
Just for the sake of testing, install Crystal Report on that client machine and
run your application again. If it works then you are certainly missing some dll.
Make sure that you did your deployment correctly.

As added in your related questiion.

Could very well be.  CR has a habit of changing the interface between versions.

The server not opened yet is generally a missing dll or lack of permissions

There ar etoo many for me too search through
Here is the result of my search of the CR site

CKCAT,

I would do it, only if Crystal were able to remove what it installed back. I think CR has a tendency to leave everything behind, so even it should not work, things would be working.

I also created a simple report, which reads natively from access database (no passwords, nothing fancy) and tried to access it from client computer.

The error I get is "physical database not found"

these two errors should be caused by the same dll, I am guessing.

Muratti:
That's when you check on "Save Data With Report".  For any dynamic reports
you should leave that unchecked.  If you check that box, it will save the data with
the report even without live connection to datasource.
Are you placing the Crystal Report and Access Database in the same directory?
If they are not in the same directory then it won't be able to access it.  Don't use
absolute path when using Access Database, use relative path.

Example:  don't use   C:\databases\access\abc.mdb
                 use:          ../databases/access/abc.mdb

Go to Database ==> Set Location and check your path.

If you are puting this on a network drive and try to access it from your client machine
then most likely it is the path problem.

ckcat, thanks.

I solved the physical database not found problem. I had to include couple of p2....dlls.

And "server has not yet been opened" error, I solved through using UNC for database path. In other words, the server was mapped in the testing computer, and that's why the report could not find its source.

But "server has not yet been opened" error still exists on the client side. I checked if there was any mapping, but there is none.

Also, the interesting note is, when you access a report built from a native access database connection(sitting on the server), then it does not give an error. But the error persists for Dsn connections.

Here are the details of "set location" of a sample report.

Table : \\U4\Projects\ZN Reports\AUDS_CPTY.rpt (it is not mapped)
Server type: FDSN - Zainet Reports.dsn
Server name: Zainet Reports.dsn
Database: \\U4\Projects\SRE_Reports\Zainet Reports.dsn
User Id: (empty)

So everything looks good to me, but somehow the viewer application can't access the report. "server has not yet been opened"

How did you write the code?  I did this and it work just fine.

  Dim CReport As CRAXDRT.Report
  Dim crxApplication As New CRAXDRT.Application
  Set CReport = crxApplication.OpenReport("Crystal.rpt")
  CReport.ReadRecords
  CRViewer1.ReportSource = CReport
  CRViewer1.ViewReport

ok I think I solved the last problem as well. On the client machine, the p2sodbc.dll was an older version. Somehow, 3..... something. I really could not believe how it was 3.x.x.x.

So we changed it to one with version 8.5.x.x. and it is working right now.

I will do more testing and give everyone his points.

I believe this was a really useful topic for everyone, we went over everything.

Hi , i have change the password of SQL server now my previous reports in crystal reports 8.5 are not being opened these gives the error "Server has not yet been opened" .
plz help me how can i resolve it .

by: mlmccPosted on 2004-12-29 at 20:38:11ID: 12923987

You need to open all the reports in the Crystal Designer and recconect to the database with the new password.  If that doesn't work, ask a new question.
