Question

Crystal Enterprise 9 and ASP.NET Deployment Problem.

Asked by: matchbx27

I am tring to deploy an ASP.NET application that uses Crystal Reports 9 and Crystal Enterprise 9 Standard Edition.

My web server is also my CE 9.0 server.  I have deployed my app (along with the crystal Report merge modules) to the web server.

I can login to Crystal Enterprise with no problems but I get the following error message when trying to display a report

Could not load type CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ClientDoc.ReportAppFactory from assembly CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ClientDoc

This works on my development machine with no problems.

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

ce ras is a cut down of ce. so i guess you got three cd with cr 9?
- cr 9
- ce ras
- ce

ce ras and ce both install a a different report application server service. if the assembly is called crystaldecisions.reportappserver i would assume it needs the ce ras. try installing this on the target. not too sure though, it's a bit confusing with the different services...

Before installing the whole RAS on the server, try installing the redistributable components for Crystal 9 on your server.  These are located on the Crystal 9 disk in the folder called redist\dotnet.  This should fix your problem.

by: matchbx27Posted on 2004-03-08 at 13:35:07ID: 10544538

RAS is already Installed.

Make sure CrystalDescisions.ReportAppServer.ClientDoc.dll was installed to \Program Files\Common Files\Crystal Decisions\2.0\managed.  (The 2.0 might vary depending on your version).  If it is missing then did you try installing the redistributable components from the Crystal Reports cd?

Yes it is there.

The version on the web server match my development machine.

UPDATE

the variable is declared at the top of the class.
Dim rptClientDoc As ReportClientDocument

After the user selects information on the form and clicks "view report"  this code executes:

rptClientDoc = RetrieveReportFromRAS("ReportNameAsDefinedInCE")

This is the line of code the program is blowing up on (NOT INSIDE FUNCTION RetrieveReportFromRAS)

RetrieveReportFromRAS is defined as:

Private Function RetrieveReportFromRAS(ByVal sReportName As String) As ReportClientDocument

end function

I will post more code is anyone wants to see it.

SOLUTION--At least a work-a-round until I can get a reply from Business Objects.

The application uses a ReportAppFactory object from the CrystalDecisions.ReportAppServer.ClientDoc.dll

The variable is declared as a Page Global Variable.  This is the object that cannot be loaded.

This Page Global Variable is declared as a ReportAppFactory Object was changed to type "OBJECT".  Just plain Jane vanilla OBJECT.

Now Everything works.

One other thing:

The Crystal Enterprise objects did not exist in the Managed folder (c:\program files\common files\crystal decisions\2.0\managed).   I attempted to repair the CE installation several times to no avail (Modify was not an option).   Finally I uninstalled CE 9 and reinstalled CE 9.  I must have installed CE 9 before installing the .net framework.  After that all of the CE dll's showed up in the managed folder, however, the web app still did not work.  If I had tried the solution above before uninstalling / reinstalling I'm sure I would have run into problems.

Also for any one who has to uninstall and reinstall CE 9.0:

Backup your SQL Server Database before uninstalling  and restore it after installing.  I did zip up all of the .rpt files located on the server just in case however the uninstall did not delete any of the reports that created and stored within CE.  Once I restored the database everything work exactly as it did before.

Hi matchbx27,

I would like to see your code for the ReportAppFactory portion.
I am used to retrieving it as a Desktop.Report.

But now as my requirements needs me to dynamically change the sortfield,
I understand that i need to use the CE RAS.

'' Logging on to CE
       Me.LogonToCE()
        Session("CESESSION") = ceSession

        CrystalReportViewer1.EnterpriseLogon = ceSession
''' Query the report wanted.
        ceInfoObjects = ceInfoStore.Query("SELECT Top 1 * FROM CI_INFOOBJECTS WHERE SI_NAME='rpt_TranRegAll' AND SI_INSTANCE = 0 ")
        ceInfoObject = ceInfoObjects.Item(1)

        rptAppFactory = ceInfoStore.EnterpriseSession.GetService("", "RASReportFactory")
''' Here it is where all fails.
rptAppFactory.OpenDocument(ceInfoObject)

Please help.

Thanks.

Hi thanks,

Just to confirm.
Are you using CR 9 Developer or Advanced.

As i mentioned i am using Desktop.Report. Is there any benefit of using ReportClientDocument?

I know i installed CE9.0. Does it include CE RAS in it?

This is all so confusing with little useful documentation from ex-crystal.

by: matchbx27Posted on 2004-06-10 at 07:28:47ID: 11279738

I am using CR 9 Advanced with Crystal Enterprise 9.  This is for a web app, so I'm sure a desktop app will be a little different.

Have you downloaded the sample code from Business Objects.  I don't have the samples anymore, but if you go to Businessobjects they have 8 or 9 differnet sample applications for doing this type of thing.

Hi,

Please post a comment here. I will assign the points to you.

http://www.experts-exchange.com/Databases/Crystal_Reports/Q_21021749.html

I have found more samples now.
Did the CR back in Jul 2003. There wasn;t that many materials around.

Thanks.
