I've never created a template in CR before but I have a series of reports where I thought I might give it a go. But I am getting nowhere; so either I have got the idea wrong or else it doesn't do what it says on the tin.
I wil take a very specific case which I am basing on this bit of the support document:
'
Using Template Field Objects
During the process of designing a Report Template, a need might arise to provide some specific
formatting for a field, not based on its position in the report, but instead, based on the type of field it is.
For example, a company might require that *[all date/time fields]* be displayed in military time regardless of
operating system defaults. For example, "6:02 p.m. on March 31, 2002" must be displayed as "3/31/02
18:02".
These requirements could easily be corporate or industry standard requirements, such as the ISO 9000
standard. *[ At the time the template is created, it's unknown where these fields will be located in the
report or how many of them there will be.]* A report designer can use Template Field Objects to help in
this endeavor.
' (my emphasis in *[ ..]*)
This is almost exactly my situation. I have a number of date fields which wil appear in different reports on the detail line.
Based upon the support doc, I have create a template with a single template field object and formatted this how I want it.
But I am can't see how I apply this template to my report design without wrecking the entire report design. Applying the template results in all the fields going into one column with multiple detail lines and anything outside the detail line is removed. Yes, the format in the template is applied to my fields but I don't see this trade-off working in my favour at this point!
Is there a bit I'm missing here? How do I do what the support doc suggests is possible?
