Question

Disable drill-down to a sub-report but show the sub-report data on the main report

Asked by: shovavnik

Hello Experts,

I have what is probably a very simple question for the seasoned CR developers.

I'm using the version of CR bundled with VS.NET 2003 (According to the GAC, the assembly version is 9.1.5000).

I have already developed several reports, but I'm having difficulty managing sub-reports.

The problem is that I want to show the sub-report on the main report, but I don't want to enable the user to drill-down into the sub-report. In other words, I don't want there to be additional open tabs except for the main report. Visually, the cursor shouldn't change when moved over the sub-report.

Every option I've played with that seems relevant has an adverse effect. Suppressing the drill-down causes it to not appear on the main report. Suppressing it within the sub-report causes it to be visible on the main report without any data. And so forth.

Is there any way to do this?

I'm on a very tight schedule (isn't everyone??) and I'd appreciate any answer, whether a pointer to info I can read (that I haven't yet), or any alternative solution.

I believe that is the inherent behaviour of subreports in Crystal and cannot be turned off.  I just read the cxhapter on subreports in my reference material and there was no indication that you could turn that feature off.

I agree with the .Net viewer you have no choice.  I believe this can be turned off inside of Crystal Enterprise but that's the only place I know of that it's possible.

Can you export the report to pdf and display the pdf file instead of the Report Viewer?  This would display the subreport(s) and prevent the user from doing anything with it.

Good idea Jan.

We found an ugly workaround. We place an empty text control *over* the subreport, and set formulas for its layout to match those of the subreport. That essentially disables the drill-down because the user is unable to click on the subreport itself. It's ugly, but it works.

However, we'll try the pdf approach tomorrow. It's definitely worth a shot.

I'll keep you all posted.

Let me know if you need some help with the pdf approach - works great and easy to do.

Unfortunately, we cannot use the pdf solution as we need to let the user decide what to do with the report.

The user may want to email it, print it, or export it to any of a number of formats, so exporting to pdf will limit us severely.

Our solution, though relatively ugly, works.

I'm going to request to cancel this question, but I appreciate your advice!

shovavnik,

Please request that this question be PAQ'd and you get your points back.  This will refund the points to you but will still leave the question available for future reference.  Your workaround, while ugly, is a viable solution and may be beneficial for others to see in the future.

Hello,

For future reference, it turns out that our solution is not a viable solution after all, since the dimensions of the controls do not support formulas, at least in the version of Crystal that we're using.

For now, unless we find a better solution, we'll either modify the workflow of the application and let the user choose the export before the report is produced and leave the drill-down functionality in there, or just ignore this issue.

In any case, I would like to have the question closed.

And I would also like to reward janmarini for the suggestion to export to pdf that gave us at least a partial solution. Can I reward for 100 points? Do I need to open a special question just for janmarini in order to do this like it used to work last year (when I participated more)?

Thanks a lot to all of you!

shovavnik,

Open a zero point question in Community Support and explain that you would like to reduce the points on this question (include a link here) to 100.  They will post here to make sure no one objects and then after the points are reduced you can simply Accept Jan's answer normally.

shovavnik - I am glad that I was able to help out, I have faced this problem too.   I pretty much ended up with your solution at that time - offering options:   1 report for export to Excel (data-only, with no headers, etc.), another for viewing/printing and sometimes even a separate detail report to substantiate the summary.  No points are necessary - please save them for a rainy day.  Hopefully our discussion will help others facing a similar situation.

Sorry it took me so long to get back to the question.

Thanks for your help everyone!

janmarini, I apologize, but I must refuse your request.

Plus, it happens to be a rainy day here :) (not to mention a stormy week)
