If you're talking strictly from Crystal, then no there is not any way to do this.  If you're using an application - for example if you're calling the report from vb.net, then you can probably do something of this nature.

Agree.  You would probably have to add your own REFRESH button to the viewer or build the report, change the text object then rebuild the report before displaying it.

Since this is done through code rather than user interaction, does he need the royalty required dlls?

Actually if you use the .Net viewer, it does throw a "ReportRefresh" event that you can trap to avoid having to use your own 'Refresh' button.

You can change properties of an existing field w/out needing royalty dll's as long as the field already exists on the report.  You cannot add a new field at runtime, that still requires the expensive dll's.

Sorry it took me so long to respond.

We had to put this off for awhile so we could take care of more urgent issues.

Is there any way to sort of "freeze" this question until we have an opportunity to try out the solutions mentioned here?

Hello,

I apologize for not posting an update sooner.

Actually, we have not forgotten about this issue, but we still haven't had an opportunity to try out the solutions mentioned here.

In fact, it seems like catching the refresh event mentioned may very well solve an additional outstanding issue we have with Crystal.

The problem is, that we're standing before release and this is a lower priority item.

I'd prefer to keep the issue open, if it's alright with everybody here, for another few weeks, until I have an opportunity to try it out.

Hello all,

We're actually working on this issue right now. Just another day or so, and I should be able to say whether the solution you all offered can work for us, or at least if it's a viable solution.

My reports experts is currently evaluating this solution and a couple other options we considered a few months ago, but had to put off.

Thanks for your patience,

Thanks for all your patience.

We've managed to get frodoman's suggestion to work more or less to our satisfaction, so I'm granting him all the points.

Unfortunately, it's very difficult to turn this into a truly generic solution that'll work for all our reports. We have to write code (even if minimal) for each report, to account for the differences in the schemas and for the general design layout differences. Our problem is confounded even more by the need to support multiple languages, including right-to-left languages. Needless to say, we'd prefer to avoid having to write multiple identical reports just because they use different languages.

Chances are, as soon as we get the opportunity, we'll abandon Crystal for a more full-fledged and flexible reporting solution. Maybe Microsoft's Reporting Services will work for us.

In any case, thanks for your help and for your patience.
