Question

Parameters requiring login details

Asked by: benissitt

When I go to set parameters for reports in Crystal Server, I am being asked for login details for the database. I have a number of reports that use data parameters and these all work OK. It is when I have parameters set on other fields that I run into a problem

Isn't that expected behavior?

If you have a parameter based on a database field then in order to read the possible values of the parameter you must read the database table - ergo you're prompted to authenticate to the database.

There is a seperate part to enter login details for the database that I have entered.

Surely I don't have to issue the database password to everyone who will be accessing the reports?

I understood this was when you were configuring the report - so the user is getting prompted at runtime?  Of course that isn't desired result!

If you login to crystal server I think you can find the data connection for your parameter in the dynamic prompts folder.  If you click (or maybe dble-click) on it some properties should open and I believe one of them allows you to determine if there is an authentication prompt.

Where is the dynamic prompts folder located?

No you need to set the database password in the CMC (Central management Console).  Either navigate to the folder via the folders section or use the Objects section and search for your report. Once you located it, go to the Process>Database and make sure the user and password is filled in correctly.

I have filled in the details here but it doesn't seem to have solved the issue. It is still asking for login details when I go to select parameters for the report. I have attached a screen shot of the issue

Within that same section, make sure the prompt user for login is unchecked. Outside of the database section I am at a lose for what else would cause this.

by: benissittPosted on 2008-08-20 at 05:52:29ID: 22268832

I think the problem is arising from the fact my report uses more than one database and there only appears to be room to enter login details for one database. The username and password are the same for all databases that the report uses. Is there any way around this?

by: wykabryanPosted on 2008-08-20 at 06:46:08ID: 22269339

If there are multiple datasources you should see all of them in a box that is to the left of the username and password section. It will also pick up subreport database connections. If there is more than one, just click on each one and fill it in and then update.

I think adding these codes to the form where you are displaying the report may help...

Incase of the database having integrated security to true (that is, it does not require user id and password to access the database) then use this
<crystal report name/instance name>.DataSourceConnections.Item(0).SetConnection("server", "database", True)

Else if it requires a user id and password then
<crystal report name/instance name>.DataSourceConnections.Item(0).SetConnection("server", "database", False)
<crystal report name/instance name>.SetDatabaseLogon("userid","password")
