Question

Can different versions of Crystal Reports coexist on one computer?

Asked by: techcity

I have a client that runs two software Expandable and PanaPro, both have Crystal Report integrated, but at different version though.

Expandable v8.3 is a SQL server client side software. When it is installed, CR8.5 will be installed automatically.
PanaPro v5.6 is sort of stand alone, it does not talk to SQL server. When it is installed, CR8.5 will be installed automatically.
We have no problem running both software until we recently upgraded PanaPro to v5.7 which has CR11 integrated.

The problem is that if we install Expandable v8.3 and PanaPro v5.7 on a computer, Expandable will have problems with reports, while PanaPro is fine.  I guess there is a conflict between CR8.5 and CR11.

Expandable has a newer version, v8.4 that includes a higher version of CR. However, to upgrade Expandable from v8.3 to v8.4, it can be very costly.
Panapro 5.7 has many neat features that the client really likes and they do not want to go back to v5.6

Now the question is
Do we still have a chance to run Expandable v8.3 and PanaPro v5.7 on the same computer? Or it is totally impossible?

Both software do not offer "Custom Install". The installation comes to "Finish" quickly after started, there is no "Next" "Next" in the middle. I tried to install them in different order, but this did not do the trick.

Thanks a lot and have a good day

Jack

I'm not familiar with Expandable or PanaPro but I do have both CR8.5 and CR XI installed on the same pc.  I'd guess that your PanaPro upgrade included some newer .dll files that are incompatible with the 8.5 version.

You might need to install them in the other order

PanaPro then Expandable.

You might try reinstalling Expandable.

I remember reading that to get CR8.5 and higer versions to work together it sometimes required a reinstall of CR8.5

Hi mlmcc,

I have tried to install Panapro first then Expandable, no joy. I also tried to install Expandable first then Panapro, same problem.

"I remember reading that to get CR8.5 and higer versions to work together it sometimes required a reinstall of CR8.5"
- this may be a good hint. Expandable has Crystal Report 8.5 integrated, there is not a separate CD for Crystal Reports coming with Expandable.  But, I can try to find one.

No, I was thinking to install

Expandable
Panapro
Expandable

I seem to remember there was something that gets lost from CR8.5 when it is installed first.  The solution was to install
CR8.5 then CR9 then reinstall CR8.5

Thank you all for the comments on this question.
I have done all the trials that install the software in different sequences, but no joy.
Eventually the client decided to install the two software on two different computers seperately. This fixed the problem.
