Question

Crystal Report .NET - Setting Paper Size

Asked by: suresh_bansal

Hi all

We developed .NET Windows application.
a) In Crystal Reports - When Paper size for the Report is kept as Letter , A4, A3, Legal - It is shown properly in the Selected Printer before actual print. Orinentation i.e Portrait /Landscape is also shown properly in the Laser as well as Dot Matrix Printers.

We have problem with Crystal Reports as under :-
Problem
b) When Report -> Printer property is set to Dot Matrix Printer and Paper Size selected is Fan Fold 8.5 x 12 Inch , it is shown as Letter in the Printer Properties before actual print. If we set the paper size to A4, Legal etc. even in Dot Matrix Printer say Epson FX 1050+ (any epson compatible) , it is shown correctly.

Fanfold 8.5 x 12 Inch is the normal available size with Dot Matrix Printers. For actual printing we first need to go to Printer Proper Properties ->Set the paper size to Fanfold 8.5 x 12 Inch and then Print which becomes inconvenient as every time, we need to set the Top of the Page

Your expert guidance is needed to set the Paper Size Fanfold 8.5 x 12 Inch on the Dot Matrix Pritner. We are fully able to capture the Paper size from the Crystal Report Object but we are not able to set the required paper size in the Printer Properties using Crystal Report Viewer Object and using Framework 2.0 classes

How are you trying to set the paper size?

by: namanpatelPosted on 2009-03-23 at 00:59:05ID: 23955456

You need to select default print settings for the printer and whenever printer is selected for use those default settings will be populated in print dialog box.

You can change that setting in windows.
Go to Printers in control panel
right click on desired printer
select printing Preference
Change default paper size to fan fold 8.5x12
Apply changes

Then try to print report you should have default paper size as 8.5x12.

Report Size is selected as under :-

a) Earlier designed Crystal Report is opened with Crystal Report Ver 8.0
b) File ->Printer Setup ->Printer Selected is say Epson FX 2170 and after then It automatically Fills Paper Size with the available Paper Sizes with that Printer e.g 8.5 x 12 In that is selected.
c) Later when we Open that report in Crystal Report Viewer - It automatically has the Printer Object on this but it shows default falue of the Paper Size as Letter which casuses this inconvenience.

This behaviour is not there when we select the other Paper Sizes like Letter, A4, A3, Legal etc and when that report is opened in Crystal Viewer Object ->?Printer shows correct Paper size on its own

I don't know.  Do all printers have that paper size?

Only Dot Matrix Printers have that size whereas standard sizes like letter, A4, A3, Legal suze are available on all Printers i.e Dot Matrix, Laser Jet as well as Desk Jet

This problem is faced with Paper Sizes i.e Fanfold size papers available in Dot Matrix Printers

I understood that.  Did you design the report with a dot matrix printer set as default?

Yes actually we wish to Print Purchase Order on the Continuous Stationery which can be fed only in Dot Matrix Printers and its default paper size available in the market is 8.5 x 12 inch and that Paper Size Available is shown as Fanfold 8.5 x12 in  among all Dot Matrix Printers which are EPSON Compatible.

If you designed it on that printer it should remember the paper size.

Does the printer have a default paper size option?
Perhaps you need to set it there also.

Setting default paper size with the Dot matrix Printer is not a solution. Becase ther are 2-3 Fan Fold Paper size available in addition to normal paper sizes like A4, A3, Legal size.

It needs to set at the time when Crystal Report Viewer is opened with the Report. Some report may be desined on Legal Size. If it start picking the default paper size as set with the Printer - It will pose much greater problems with all other reports.

At the moment, problem faced is with Fan Fold Paper Size, later on we will start facing this paper size problem with all other reports which do not have this paper size.

Anyway we also tried this opetion of setting the default paper size with the Dot matrix Printer but that also does not work.

Some suggestion is needed to set the Paper Size in the Printer Programatically in these kind of Fan Fold paper Size so that we shall be opening the report in Crystal Viewer ->Set the paper Size in the Printer Button attached to Crystal Viewer Object and our purpose would be served. Whereas reports designed on Normal Available paper Size on Laser /Desk Jet i.e A4 , Legal, A3 do not pose any problem on the Dot Matrix Printers also.

Is the rquired paper available when you try to set the page size in Crystal code?

mlmcc

by: suresh_bansalPosted on 2009-03-30 at 22:43:35ID: 24025944

Reply to mlmcc

We could not try  the setting of Paper Size in Crystal Code.

Uptill now we did not require to set the Paper Size by our own code as Crystal Report would set the Paper Size as picked up from the Report which is opened in Crystal Viewer.

We only require to set it by our code for Fan Fold Paper Szie, as it is not doing so automatically as it does in other Paper Sizes

Are you printing from code orthe viewer?

If the viewer, do you change the printer?

1.  We open the report in Crystal Viewer.
2.  Dot Matrix Printer is set as default printer
3. We do not change the printer

Still when we open the desired reports, its paper size shown is letter in the Printer properties.

You may try this scenario at your end.

I just added an Epson MX-100 printer
Set it as default
Opened a report
Changed the printer to fanfold 8x12
Saved the report
Closed the report
Opened the report
Checked printer - showed fanfold
closed crystal
restarted Crystal
Opened the report
Checked the printer - showed fanfold 8x12

After changing the printer and paper did you save the report?

mlmcc

by: suresh_bansalPosted on 2009-04-05 at 02:14:56ID: 24070777

We saved the report properly. Diference is we design the Crystal report  in Ver 8.0 and that may be causing the difference.

>>Opened a report
>>Changed the printer to fanfold 8x12  Kindly inform under which version of Crystal Report you opened the report and changed it. This may be casuing the trouble.

Further Saved the report
Closed the report

We Opened the report in crystal report in Crystal Report Viewer and that shows paper size as letter and we need to change that every time.

I used CR XI

It worked even in CR 7

It may be the viewer.  Is that the default for the printer?
