The default margins are generally the minimum margins the printer requires sice most cannot print on some small margin of the page. That width is required for the wheels pulling the paper through the printer.

Use Default Margins will apply a set of margins according to the size and layout of the paper. So if you are using 8x11 it may put the margins at .25 all around for portrait. But if you switch to landscape you will notice that the setting change. If you uncheck it, and change the layout you will notice that the numbers never change.
Adjust automatically will allow crystal to determine what the margins should be set at. This option is not used that often. The main reason is how choppy it is in determining what the correct setting are for margins. It was put in place because of different printers read different margins. A4 is not the same as letter.
