Question

CR 2008 vs CR 2008 Server

Asked by: EYoung

I work in a company that has its own intranet.  From the intranet the employees can run a variety of Crystal Reports (version 8.5).  Recently we have begun developing the reports in CR 2008 Developer.

Do we need to install the CR 2008 runtime modules on the intranet server in order to get the new reports to show, or do we need to purchase the CR 2008 Server product and install that software on the intranet server?

I don't understand how these work and which we need.  Thanks for the informaiton.

CR Server is an application that will allow you to run reports.

You can use it or develop a viewing application of your own to do the same thing.

How are they viewing the reports from CR8.5?

I am not sure.  It looks like they are running CR 8.5 Server on the intranet server to view the reports.  We have already purchased CR 2008 Developer, so can we just "publish" the CR 2008 reports to the intranet server and bypass having to upgrade to the CR 2008 Server package?  Do we need to buy the server product if we already have the developer product?

Thanks

ps - Can you also look at this question of mine:

There is no CR 8.5 server.

You could have Crystal Enterprise 8.5 or be using RAS.

You can develop a web application that allows users to preview reports or use a third-party viewing application.

I checked and we are using CR XI R2 Server on our current intranet to show the older versions of CR reports.  Here are the questions:.

1.  It is my understanding that XI R2 does not work with VB.Net 2008 CR Viewers?

2.  Can I just write a VB.Net 2008 application that displays a CR 2008 report and show it on the current intranet?

3.  The current intranet is using CR XI R2 Server.  Do we need to upgrade to CR 2008 Server?

I am mainly trying to figure out if we need to purchase the upgrade.

Thanks

1.  I belueve that is correct.  If you are using VS 2008 viewer then that is built on CR10 so it doesn't support the new features of CR XI.  If you built a VB.Net application using the CR 2008 viewer it should work with CR XI.

2.  Yes, so long as you use the viewer from CR2008 and not the viewer that comes with VS2008.

Upggrading to CR 2008 Server may resolve all the issues but it may also create new ones.  There is a trial available on the CR site.
