Question

Crystal Date Diff on ten columns

Asked by: stacydr

Hi-
I'm trying to figure out the easiest way to write these formulas.

My data is stored by company by row with ten date columns. (See xls file)
I want to add a date diff between each date progression, but if there is a null I want to skip it and move to the next column.

example:
if ISNULL({statusdate2}) then DateDiff ("d",StatusDate1},CurrentDate ) else
if ({statusdate2} >#01/01/2009#) then then DateDiff ("d",{StatusDate1},{StatusDate2})

But there seem to be so many variations of what could happen - is there an easier way to do this?
Thanks, Stacy

You need to define what happens in each case.

You want to get the date difference between consecutive pairs?
Status2 - Status1

WHat about Status3?

Hi - thanks for helping - here are the variations that I have started to work on - but the code below does not work properly - each section works fine on it's own but doesn't seem to work properly together - I'm not sure if I'm over complicating this or not...

if ISNULL({StatusDate2}) and ISNULL ({StatusDate3}) and
ISNULL({StatusDate4}) and ISNULL({StatusDate5}) and
ISNULL({StatusDate6}) and ISNULL({StatusDate7}) and
ISNULL({StatusDate8}) and ISNULL({StatusDate9}) and
ISNULL({StatusDate10}) then DateDiff ("d",{StatusDate1},CurrentDate ) else

if ({StatusDate2}> #01/01/2009#) then datediff ("d", {StatusDate1},{StatusDate2}) else

if ISNULL({StatusDate2}) and ({StatusDate3}> #01/01/2009#) then DateDiff ("d",{StatusDate1} ,{StatusDate3} )

Before trying to write the formula you need to determine which fields can be NULL and what values you need returned as a result.

It may be easier too determine which fields are NOT null and what is returned.

Hi-
I'm still working on this problem:
Each formula works fine but when I try to stack them to cover all possiblitied - they don't work

My formulas work like this:
@date01-02: is the date diff between date1 and date2 fields
@date02-04: is the date diff between date2 and date4
etc

The stages are other forumulas from the precious scenerio:
example:
@stage2: {@date01-02}
@stage3: if ISNULL ({@date01-02}) then {@date01-03} else {@date02-03}
@stage4: if ISNULL({@stage2}) and ISNULL({@stage3}) then {@date01-04} else
                 if {@stage2}>0 and ISNULL({@stage3}) then {@date02-04} else
                 if {@stage3}>0 then {@date03-04}

Now stage2 and stage3 are working fine -
But stage4 is not - each line works fine - but they don't seem to work stacked - do you see anything that I am missing?

Thanks, Stacy

Hi-
So I saw another post by someone regarding nulls in crystal and they said:
" > In general, when Crystal Reports encounters a null valued field in a
 > formula, it immediately stops evaluating the formula and produces
 > no value. "
that seems to be my issue I believe.
I'm going to try and rewrite the formulas using NOT IS NULL -- but if you have any other suggestions pls let me know.
Thanks, Stacy

So here is my new stage4 and it seems to be working...

if NOT ISNULL({@stage3}) then {@date03-04} else
if NOT ISNULL({@stage2}) then {@date02-04} else
{@date01-04}

It is not the detecting of a NULL value but trying to use a NULL value in anything other than the IsNull function.

So if you want to test the second column after finding the first is null you have to test it efore using.

The usual way is Not IsNull then execute your evaluation.
