Question

Seagate Crystal Reports v8.0 & Vista/XP

Asked by: gowflow

Hello Experts,
I hv a weired problem. I developp on my Vista Home Premium PC Seagate Crystal Reports v8.0 reports and use the add-in Distribution Expert to turn my reports into .exe for my users to work with. The .exe produced run fine on my Vista machine. when I try to run these reports on the user's XP machine nothing happens (the report doesn't run and no error I verified that the database location is set as same as report and still does not work).

I tried to run the Distribution expert to package a setup so I can intall it on the user's machine to intall required dll's there. When I run Setup on XP it starts with Initialisation phase and freezes there. The package does not install. I hv to ALT/CTRL/DEL end task to stop it.

Any idea ? much appreciated

You may have to build the install package on an XP machine.

I agree.  I haven't been successful at using VB6 with CR XI under Vista.  I think it is because even though I have Admin privileges, the VB6 doesn't seem to recognize them when I try to add the Crystal controls to the project.

I have built the setup package on XP and it worked. I was able to deloy it on XP machine and it installed all the DLL and am able to run the reports as .exe from XP. However, Still an issue when I package the report under vista and place it on the server and a user running XP run the report, the results are weired. When I run the same report from my Vista machine the results are fine.
Any idea mlmcc ??
Not an option to have the full package deployed under XP it has to remain packaging under Vista and installed on server.
Appreciate your help on this one.

You may not be able to do that.  I would ask that in the OS forums.

What is wierd about the results?
Is the report built on XP and Vista using the same printer driver?
Is it just a formatting issue?

Well let me give you the details:
When I run the Crystal report as .exe from the 3 options:
1. Print the Report to a Window
2. Export the Report
3. Print the report to a Printer
I run by default option 1. After selecting the Parameters, the report run thru all the records and it displays the data correctly onto the Window.
When I select Export and save as .txt it saves to the file only part of my data.
My data consists of header info and details. It only save in the .txt file the header info and not the details although the data was shown correctly when the report displays to the window. Actually when I select Export it runs quite fast unusally.

When I run the same report from my Vista machine, and select Export it displays the record and take more time ... and shoa a trace of the records beeing processed and the outcome is correct.
I tired to Export as .rtf and also same result on Header no Details.

Hope above clarifies.

How is it exported?  Do you know the code that is used?

Does it print ok?

by: gowflowPosted on 2009-11-15 at 02:01:33ID: 25824161

Did not try the print will try tomorrow in the office. As to Export I choose from the drop down list in the .exe packaged by CR8 Compile Report. It is a Export Icon when pressed it list all types Excel, Word, Crystal report etc ... I choose Text (.txt) and tried also Ritch Text Format (.rtf) both gave me same wrong results.

mlmcc,
When I package the pgm that have the new RDC and deploy it on the client I got some files missing after adding them the pgm runs fine but when I try to view the report I get Invalid TLC Record.

I looked up for a solution here and saw someone having exactly the same problem as mine in ID # 20458503 and your solution was:

Oops sorry for the typo error is "Invalid TLV record"
rgds/gowflow

by: mlmccPosted on 2009-11-17 at 08:44:22ID: 25841481

Invalid TLV is
1.  A corrupt report file
2.  A report file from a version later than the one beig used to open the report.  Using CR8 to open a CR9 file

by: gowflowPosted on 2009-11-17 at 10:01:07ID: 25842250

Well it is neither in my case. The report works well and opens thru my VB6 application and run correctly. Same report is ran and being run by users in their version of CR using OCX. Now that I upgraded my VB application to run RDC I removed references to OCX and added following libraries to work with RDC
Under Components I have:
Crystal ActiveX Viewer Library 11.5 - File: C:\Program Files\Business Objects\Common\3.5\crystalreportviewers115\ActiveXControls\CRViewer.dll

Under Refrences I added following:
as per below image. I added almost every single reference to Crystal 11.5 that would make sense. !!!

When I run the program from the source code on my Vista machine all works fine. When I package it thru VB Deployment wizard package it packages fine. When I install on client machine also it installs fine (client has XP) when I run the program it run fine but when I launch a report it give me the Invalid TLV.

This report is built under CR8.
Appreciate your help

by: mlmccPosted on 2009-11-17 at 11:31:22ID: 25843196

I believ you only need the first and third references.  You should be able to delete the others.

In some cases two of the libraries have the same functions so you may be getting a mix of lib1 and lib2 when you call the report.  They may not work together

mlmcc

by: gowflowPosted on 2009-11-18 at 03:35:55ID: 25848582

Yes I did that I removed all Crystal refrences except 1 and 3 I do not get the TLV Error any more but
when it launches my viewer I see the form White (no viewer on it) and I get An Crystal Reports Viewer Error: Failed to load database information as per snapshot below. I have added the library for ver 12 which is Crystal Report 2008 I had the same error for Crystal Report ver XI !!
Any idea ?

That indicates the database driver dlls aren't loaded

by: gowflowPosted on 2009-11-18 at 08:51:42ID: 25851702

Yes and how to load them and what they are ?
Am lost !! Am even getting this now in my VB app not only on the client machine ! is it possible that it is not loading the database cos it is not seeing its path. In this PGM I do not give the database path and name form within VB6 I let it take the default that is in the report. Is it possible that by using now RDC you have to let it know where the databas epath is ?
gowflow

by: mlmccPosted on 2009-11-18 at 09:03:52ID: 25851858

No.  The RDC should just use what is in the report.

by: gowflowPosted on 2009-11-19 at 01:50:34ID: 25858887

Well true. After long long search and troubleshooting here is what I found:
I use reports version CR 4.0 Pro and CR 8.0 Pro and some testing sample CR XI Dev and some CR 2008

I noticed that when I load the reports in my VB6 pgm I tested the DllName property of my tables and noted this:
crdb_p2bxbse.dll (DBF files)
crdb_p2bjet.dll (in ver CR 4.0 PRo MDB file)
crdb_dao.dll (in ver 8.0 and above MDB file)

Am having the problem of 'Failed to Load Database Information' when it hit crdb_p2bjet.dll (in ver CR 4.0 PRo MDB file) .

So I looked everywhere on my pc and could not find a trace of this file !!! Any idea where I can get it from ??

I used a trick to overcome this situation as when I get this table I show the report in the OCX version of crystal report and else I use RDC ver 12 with the Library Runtinme for 11.5 (as ver 12 does not have a library for runtime !!!)

WHAT A MIX !!! I prefer to find crdb_p2bjet.dll so I can only use RDC ! Any idea where to find it ?

An other issue when I run the report thru RDC no matter what I set
CrystalReport2.DisplayProgressDialog = True or
CRViewer1.EnableProgressControl = True on the Viewer control, I cannot see the record count displaying I only see the results with no trace to Record count total etc...! My database are some 100000+ records and it takes sometimes couple of minutes to several .. to go thru the records but no display it is annoying !!! Any idea ???

Tks your help
gowflow

by: mlmccPosted on 2009-11-19 at 06:33:34ID: 25860680

CR2008 dropped all support for VB6 so there is no library  for use with VB6 and the RDC.

The CR4 library is probably available on a VB6 disk.

As I recall the progress dialog never worked with the RDC.

mlmcc

by: gowflowPosted on 2009-11-19 at 07:43:07ID: 25861470

So you suggest I use Viewer of CR XI together with its libraries and forget about CR 2008 Viewer ?
As far as progress dialog is there any fix or anything we can do to show progress ? I just ran a report from report and due to slow connection the report took 1:30 hour to run with no trace whatsoever ... thank god I was patient to see the results !!

by: mlmccPosted on 2009-11-19 at 08:01:25ID: 25861674

Progress dialog - I never found a fix.

I wouldn't try mixing versions or dlls within an application.  I would use CR XI.  I think it needs to be release 2

mlmcc

by: gowflowPosted on 2009-11-19 at 08:14:27ID: 25861816

Tks for all your help. That's what I did back to CR XI release 2.
