Question

SQL Reporting services and multiple parameters

Asked by: tazmanian

I have the following SQL statement in SQL Reporting services and would like to know how to change the parameters to be something like an and/or.  What I mean is that when a person fills in more than one parameter that would have a choice of "OR"ing them or "AND"ing them by a button or something.  Otherwise, it is just "OR"s them right now (unless you guys have a better idea".  Thanks.

SELECT     dbo.PART.ID, dbo.PART.DESCRIPTION, dbo.PART.ABC_CODE, dbo.PART.UNIT_MATERIAL_COST, dbo.PART.QTY_ON_HAND, dbo.PART.MFG_NAME,
                      dbo.PART.MFG_PART_ID, dbo.PART.USER_3, dbo.PART.USER_4, dbo.PART.USER_5, dbo.PART.USER_6, dbo.PART.USER_7, dbo.PART.USER_8,
                      dbo.VENDOR_PART.VENDOR_PART_ID, dbo.VENDOR.NAME AS Vendor_Name, dbo.PART.USER_2
FROM         dbo.PART LEFT OUTER JOIN
                      dbo.VENDOR_PART ON dbo.PART.ID = dbo.VENDOR_PART.PART_ID LEFT OUTER JOIN
                      dbo.VENDOR ON dbo.VENDOR_PART.VENDOR_ID = dbo.VENDOR.ID
WHERE     (dbo.PART.ID = @part_id) OR
                      (dbo.PART.USER_3 = @Parameter1) OR
                      (dbo.PART.USER_4 = @Parameter2) OR
                      (dbo.PART.USER_5 = @Parameter3) OR
                      (dbo.PART.USER_6 = @Parameter4) OR
                      (dbo.PART.USER_7 = @Parameter5) OR
                      (dbo.PART.USER_8 = @Parameter6)

Are you asking about how to do this in SQL or how to do this through the reporting interface.  If you question is about the interface it will not support that.  YOu will need to write an app, call the report and render it in a report viewer control.

Are you after the WHERE clause being all 'AND' or all 'OR' (if that makes sense!)

If thats the case you could have 2 SPs, one for AND and one for OR.  Duplicate your report table and have 1 SP on each.  Then add another report parameter which would then show or hide the tables.

Huh?

by: simon_kirkPosted on 2006-03-09 at 02:33:57ID: 16142926

Something like:

WHERE
CASE WHEN @WhereParameter = 'OR' THEN
(dbo.PART.ID = @part_id) OR
(dbo.PART.USER_3 = @Parameter1) OR
(dbo.PART.USER_4 = @Parameter2) OR
(dbo.PART.USER_5 = @Parameter3) OR
(dbo.PART.USER_6 = @Parameter4) OR
(dbo.PART.USER_7 = @Parameter5) OR
(dbo.PART.USER_8 = @Parameter6)
ELSE
(dbo.PART.ID = @part_id) AND
(dbo.PART.USER_3 = @Parameter1) AND
(dbo.PART.USER_4 = @Parameter2) AND
(dbo.PART.USER_5 = @Parameter3) AND
(dbo.PART.USER_6 = @Parameter4) AND
(dbo.PART.USER_7 = @Parameter5) AND
(dbo.PART.USER_8 = @Parameter6)
END

you can also use dynamic SQL which is how I have seen most things like this done.  Samples are here

http://www.sommarskog.se/dynamic_sql.html#Dynamic_and_SP

Its a little harder to understand but much more powerful than a case statment.  It may not be fully needed in this case but if you had more choices that 2 (say 30 or so) it would be much better than writing the same code 30 times and changing one word.
