How do I union different data types. Both have date, one is numeric the other character I believe

I am trying to get this query to work..

SELECT Q_Open_Orders_SO.ShipYear AS [Year]
FROM Q_Open_Orders_SO
UNION ALL SELECT Q_Shipped_Orders_AR.InvYear AS [Year]
FROM Q_Shipped_Orders_AR;



I believe that in one table year is numeric the other alpha.Start Free Trial
