Question

How to load data into an essbase DB directly from an external SQL server?

Asked by: andresgottlieb

I'm using Hyperion Essbase 9.3.1.0.0.135.

I have a DB with a defined outline. Instead of loading data into it from a plain text file or an excel spreadsheet, I need to load it directly from an external SQL Server.

Thanks for any help!

Create a new load rule and select from the file menu Open SQL source.  You'll need to have an ODBC connection set up on the Essbase server, which will then be available for you to select from the source drop down in the load rule.  Enter credentials into the load rule to retrieve the data set into the load rule.  You can then set up your load rule the same as if you were working with a text file.  When done save your load rule and then going forward when ever you load from that rule the SQL definition will be saved and you will just need to enter credentials.

"You'll need to have an ODBC connection set up on the Essbase server"

How do I set up this?

Thank you!

You do that through the OS like any other ODBC connection.  If you are using Windows and have access to server you can do it through Administrative tools in control panel.

Ok. I was able to create de ODBC connection in the Admin Tools. That worked fine.

But in the "Essbase Administration Services" control I can't do what you say. This is what I do:

1) I create a new rule (The "Data Prep editor opens")
2) I click on file->Open SQL (I don't have the "Open SQL Source" option you mentioned, but I assume this is the same)
3) A window opens. This window has 3 dropdown controls: Essbase server, Application and Database.

I don't know what to do in this step. The Essbase dropdown has only my essbase server. The Application server a list of my applications, and Databese the list of databases for the selected application.

I'm attaching you a screenshot of this state.

Thank you!

From the screen shot you showed above, just click OK to go to next step and enter SQL credentials.
