Can I delete .CFG files?

Can I delete the .CFG files in C:\WINDOWS\system32\spool\drivers\w32x86\3 folder?  It seems they are created ever so often and is taking up 3.0 GB of disk space. Thank you.

Can you provide the full name of the .CFG file?

I would initially think it's probably just a corrupt print job, but those shouldn't end in .CFG.  I think .CFG files are for default printer settings.

We may be able to determine which printer it is for based on the name.  I would recommend deleting that printer, removing the driver, and then re-adding it.

35,000 files!  Wow.

I'm thinking you can delete them.  Is this a terminal server maybe?  I'm curious why so many of them are getting created.

I suggest moving them to a different folder before deleting, just in case you need them.  Then if all goes well, Delete.

Yes, this is a terminal server 2003.  I have 7 printers installed.  Six are remote printers.

I wonder if each of those is a user's printer configuration.

I just checked our Terminal Server and is has 68 .CFG files for a total of 5 Megs.  The files sizes are much smaller than yours as well.

I would suggest removing and re-adding the printer drivers installed on that server and moving those files out of the directory (and later deleting).  Users may need to configure any default print options they have.

I'm thinking it's one bad print driver that is creating one of those each time a user prints.

I deleted all of the CFG files (backup first), then deleted all the printers.  After I rebooted the PC.  Some of the printers came back.  I'll now monitor the CFG files.
