Question

Can I do integrated reporting from Multiple Essbase Cubes using Microstrategy?

Asked by: j1981

Dear experts,
My company has data available in different Hyperion Essbase Cubes. We currently use Webfocus for most of the BI reporting needs. There was a need to have a proper Dashboard in which user can drill down into any level of details of the data. Does Microstrategy provide the capability of providing this integrated reporting from multiple cubes.

I checked with a Business Intelligence colleague and he suggested that Microstrategy cannot pull from Essbase cubes. But I did some reading from Google and Microstrategy's website and found that it does support the same.

If it is possible, I think it will take less time than developing the same in Webfocus.

If someone has experience in these lines, could you please reply?

Thanks in advance.

I don't have direct experience, but having been an Essbase developer for many years I can tell you that a lot of third party front ends do not work that well with Essbase unless they have been specifically written for Essbase.  Tools like Business Objects for instance can connect to Essbase but they often treat it more like a relational OLAP source rather than the true multi-dimensional OLAP data source that it really is.  These products often have trouble working with Essbase features that support ragged hierarchies and attributes.  Often the tool will deconstruct the Essbase data and then roll it back up itself, defeating the entire purpose of having it in Essbase to begin with, as Essbase is much more efficient at consolidating than these products.
So I believe there is an adapter for Microstrategy that will allow you to connect to Essbase, but you might not want to get your hopes up too high as I'm not sure what functionality it is going to expose.

Thanks a lot for the response.

We are actually looking for a short term solution(1.5 years) till the completion of a datawarehousing solution. Can you suggest any Essbase specific tools that can serve the purpose,Other than the Essbase Excel Add-in? We could have tried in Excel, but there are too many issues coming up like lower performance, Excel crashes etc..

The default web reporting tool for Essbase was something called Hyperion Analyzer, which is now called Web Analysis.  I've never been a fan of the product, but it does some basic things okay.  The thing with that is, rumor has it Oracle is going to be dicontinuing the product.  Oracle's plan is to get people using their OBI platform which they are currently revamping to work better with Essbase.  Their products have the issues I talked about above, but since they aquired Hyperion they are now updating the OBI platform to work better with the Hyperion products.  Needless to say OBI would be a pretty big implementation.  Based on the needs you are describing, you might want to look at a company called Applied OLAP.  They have an awesome web tool called Dodeca http://www.appliedolap.com/
I would check them out, they are very knowledgable about Essbase and I believe the product is reasonably priced.
You could probably get it up and running very quickly and have reports out to your users soon after.
I think they could be a good fit for what you are looking for.

Best of luck.

Thanks a lot. I checked through the site and it looks perfect to match the requirement. There are no pricing informations given and they are asking to contact them for a site demo. I am going to raise it to my managers to do it.  I will revert as soon as I have some update. Thanks again.

Hi Garycris,

All your responses were of immense help and is greatly appreciated.

If you have the info, could you let me know how much is the licensing fee for Dodeca? It may help me in putting the case across to my managers before an actual demo is requested.

Thanks in advance.

I don't know the pricing yet, I am currently in preliminary conversations with the vendor.  I know some other people who are using it and said the pricing was very reasonable.  You now how this stuff goes, they don't generally throw the price right out there until they get a chance to talk to you.  I can say that these guys don't seem too bad from the sales side, they are not overly pushy and have been willing to answer all my questions.  So I would just go ahead and reach out to them and ask any questions you have.  The guys I have been talking to are Michael McCarty [mccarty@appliedolap.com] and Tim Tow [timtow@appliedolap.com]

I am still to get approval to check in further on this, but I feel this is the exact tool for my kind of requirement. Once something more happens I will add it to the end as a separate comment. Thanks Garychris for the prompt and great help.
