MS CRM v1.2 install on a Domain Controller (DC)

Hello,

I want to install MS CRM v1.2 for my company.  The proposed server configuration will be as follows:

Server #1 - Windows 2003 Enterprise - Exchange 2003 - Domain Controller (DC) - CRM Exchange Routing Engine
Server #2 - Windows 2003 Standard - CRM v1.2 - SQL 2000 - Domain Controller (DC)

However, the MS CRM planning documentation states "Microsoft CRM Server should not be installed on a Domain Controller".  The documentation does not state you cannot do this, just that you "should not".  I'm sure there is a logical explanation for why this should not be done?  I really do not wish to bring a third server online for this, unless absolutely necessary (we are a very small business).

OK, now for my question.  Is anyone running MS CRM v1.2 on a DC with success?  I searched the CRM documentation and MS knowledgebase, and cannot find out why MS recommends against this?

Hi Harry,

You can run MSCRM V1.2 on a DC but if you run into problems, Microsoft will not provide any support unless it is on a Small Business Server.

Going off topic, you may want to investigate the add-on products offerred by c360 ( www.c360.com) especially the Activity Summary component.

Jeff,

Thank you for your response.  As soon as I get a chance, I will try this and see what happens.  Do you by chance know why MS recommends against installing CRM on a DC?  If it is because of the extra demands a DC adds to a server that would be a non issue for me (small network).  If it is something else, such as an application / DC compatibility issue, I would be concerned.

The install of MS CRM 1.2 on a Windows 2003 Standard (DC) server ran without a hitch.  Thanks for your help Jeff.

Hello,

The reason is that it's not supported, is the load that crm / sql server can produce. Think of hundreds of employees that work on the crm server, which is also dc.
