Question

Installing MS CRM V3.0 to a Named Instance of MSSQL 2005/2000 now supported?

Asked by: SirWanker

When MSCRM V3.0 first came out, it did not support named instances of MSSQL.
Apparently, this has now changed and it is supported. So far, I have not been able to find any information on how this can be done via usual Knowledgebase and Partnersource.

Has  anyone managed to install MSCRM v3.0 to a SQL Named Instance?

Thanks

From the installatiog guide dated 10/2/2006:

Microsoft CRM Server Setup supports only the default instance of SQL Server.

Note: If you need to use a named instance of SQL Server, you must contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance. For a complete list of Microsoft Product Support Services telephone numbers and information about support costs, visit the following Microsoft Web site: http://support.microsoft.com/contactus/?ws=support.

True but outdated now.

'Support for named instances of SQL Server
When Microsoft CRM 3.0 was released, we did not support installing the Microsoft CRM databases on a computer that is running a named instance of SQL Server. After the release, additional testing was performed. Therefore, we now support installing Microsoft CRM on a computer that is running a named instance of SQL Server."

You need to be a PartnerSource member to access the above link.

I'm looking for the instructions which tech support is providing to over-ride the wizard environmental checks so you can use the SQL named instance.

Thanks though.

How is it outdated?  It says _setup_ only supports the default instance.  Clearly MS supports it as they tell you to call them for assistance.  A support call is only $245.

However, I do not have access to PartnerSource and do not have the information on the steps to do this.

There is no charge for the call regarding this.  When you see instructions that tell you to contact Microsoft support for assistance they don't charge you.

It's similar to how you get a hotfix.

I was not aware that this type of support call was free.  Good info.

cavat: it is free if Microsoft believes the issue is caused by a known bug

The solution to the issue involves disabling the EDW (Environmental Diagnostics Wizard) so that setting up against a SQL Named Instance is possible.

The key point is to initially run the setup process, allow the EDW to run and correct any issues besides the SQL named instance THEN disable the EDW.

The usual disclaimer on registry manipulation applies as serious problems might occur if you modify the registry incorrectly by using Registry Editor or by using another method. These problems might require that you reinstall your operating system. Modify the registry at your own risk.

1. On the Microsoft CRM server, click Start, click Run, and then type regedit .
2. Open the following registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft
3. If the MSCRM registry key exists, go to step 6. If the MSCRM registry key does not exist, go to step 4.
4. Right-click Microsoft, point to New, and then click Key.
5. Type MSCRM as the name of the registry key.
6. Right-click MSCRM, point to New, and then click DWORD value.
7. Type IgnoreChecks as the name, and then press ENTER.
8. Right-click IgnoreChecks, and then click Modify.
9. In the Value data box, type 1 , and then click OK.
10. In the Environment Diagnostics Wizard, click the Back button, and then click the Next button to run the Environment Diagnostics Wizard again. You will still receive the error message. However, the Next button will now be available. Click Next. Ignore the error messages.
Note You should use the IgnoreChecks registry key only to bypass the error message that is mentioned in the "Symptoms" section. Correct any other problems before you continue trying to install Microsoft CRM.
