Question

Dynamics CRM 4.0 Error

Asked by: rdracer58

We have a user in our Microsoft Dynamics CRM 4.0 system who needs to be switched to a different business unit. Whenever I try to switch them to a different business unit, the system hangs, then gives a generic error message, "An error has occurred."

What needs to be done to correct this?

Hi
Can you please enable tracing  using CRMDiag4Tool (available as a free download)  to generate a log file and send us the error information. You could also enable DevErrors to see more information of the error. Once done, please upload the error information and log file(error section) here and we can have a look at it.

I think I had a similar problem as this, as far as I can remember I deactivated the user then created them again. I would only do this a s a last resort though, maybe the CRMDiag4Tool as suggested above will show what's wrong.

You could try deactivating then activating the user, then see if you can change the business unit.

Yes, I have already tried disabling and re-enabling the user to no avail. There does not seem to be a way in CRM 4.0 to completely recreate a user account (in other words, delete, and re-add an account).

I have attached the log file from the CRMDiag4Tool.

is any of this true

You cannot change the business unit of a user if one of the following conditions is true:
If their manager's account is disabled in Microsoft CRM, and the user account has not been deleted from Active Directory directory service.
If their manager's account is disabled in Microsoft CRM, and the user account has been deleted from Active Directory.

You cannot change the business unit of a manager if one of the following conditions is true:
A user who is assigned to the manager has been disabled in Microsoft CRM, and the user account has not been deleted from Active Directory.

you might also have a timeout problem

Add the OLEDBTimeout and the ExtendedTimeout registry subkeys to increase the time-out values

            1. Click Start, click Run, type regedit , and then click OK.

            2. Locate the following registry subkey:

            HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\MSCRM

            3. Right-click MSCRM, point to New, and then click DWORD Value to create a new DWORD value.

            4.  Rename the DWORD value to the following value:

            OLEDBTimeout

            5. Right-click the DWORD value, and then click Modify.

            6. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type 86400 in the Value data box, click Decimal in the Base option, and then click OK.

Note: According to the requirement of the computer that is running SQL server and the number of customization files, the value can be larger than 86400. The value of 86400 is equivalent to 24 hours.

            7. Right-click MSCRM, point to New, and then click DWORD Value to create a new DWORD value.

            8. Rename the DWORD value to the following value:

            ExtendedTimeout

            9. Right-click the DWORD value, and then click Modify.

            10. In the Edit DWORD Value dialog box, type 1000000 in the Value data box, and then click OK.

Notes:

" In the Value data box, you can type a value that is larger than 1,000,000. However, do not type a value that is larger than 2,147,483,647. This is hexadecimal 0x7FFFFFFF.

" If this key already exists, notice the current value. After you have completed the import or the upgrade for Microsoft Dynamics CRM, set the value of this key back to the original value or delete the key if it did not previously exist. The default OLEDB timeout value is 30 seconds.

No, this user has not been assigned a manager at all nor is a manager.

by: rdracer58Posted on 2009-07-24 at 07:52:11ID: 24935472

And no, the instructions to fix the timeout error did not resolve the issue.

by: stacko111Posted on 2009-07-24 at 07:59:04ID: 24935537

Going back to my original post, can you not deactivate the user and then create a new one with the same credentials. I have done this on my system - I don't think it creates any conflicts as the same AD profile is being used.

How would I transfer records between the user IDs?

by: Aftab_KhateebPosted on 2009-07-24 at 15:32:18ID: 24939688

To transfer one from one user to the other, you can select a set of records (which is owned by the old user) make use of  "Assign" to assign or transfer records between user IDs
