To confirm leakim971's comments, when you create a new record (of any type), none of the menu items on the left hand side are available. This is normal behaviour for CRM.
Until you click on Save or Save and Close the record does not exist in the database so it would not make sense to be able to use of the menu items.

You can't send by email data not saved.
Saved = Completed, Validated by the user.
