Question

Data upload to update contact records for Dynamics

Asked by: lsavidge

Hi folks,

I have a requirement whereby I need to export data from Dynamics to use in a mass marketing tool. The data is exported to csv and read by the marketing tool. The results, including bounce backs, non-read, click throughs, etc., are written back to the csv file. The question is, how do I get this data back into Dynamics. As far as my understanding goes, the import wizard and data migration manager are the only tools provided by Microsoft for Dynamics to import data in. Updating of records is not possible using these tools. Is that right? If so, how can I acheive my goal of writing back data from the mass marketing tool back into Dynamics? I know things like Scribe exist and could be used to do such things but the cost of this tool will be the reason why it will not be an acceptable method. Any other (cheap) ideas/alternatives?

Thanks,

Lee

contact.csv

Contact                  First Name

This will update the record.

Scribe is very costly, You can easily hire sdk coder to do small sdk job for you

Ok the data I need to update in Dynamics is contact information. To be able to do that, how can I export the data in the first place and get the contact guid? This column is not available in the list of available comments.

Cheers,

Lee

Ahh, it seems when you do an export the guid is included as a hidden column. How useful.

The standard export function exports to an XLS file. It includes a hidden column containing the ID. When you save as a CSV file you can see this column as the last column in the export. Open the CSV and move the column so that it is the first column. Change the column headings to match the attribute name, it is case sensitive. The attribute name may not match the name displayed on the form. Once you have the column names correct AND and the guid column as column number 1, when you re-import the changed CSV containing your updates, the standard import tool will automatically link the columns and also it will display a tick box stating that to enrich CRM leave the tick box so it is checked and CRM will do an update rather than create new records.

There are two ways to bulk edit your data in Dynamics CRM. One using Advance Find and the other using Bulk edit Tool.

Hi,

Thanks for the additional info. This particular requirement was because a customer wanted to export the data from CRM, then update the missing data in the column exported from a 3rd party mailer tool and then write it back to CRM. Using the importer was an acceptable method for getting the updated data back in.

Thanks again.
