I am a Fourth Shift admin... Or was until 2 days go (we switched to Microsoft Navision).

What can I do for you?

by: DRRYAN3Posted on 2004-02-05 at 05:39:37ID: 10280247

Just seeing if there was much of a FS group here.

We had a division using Navision when we bought it a few years ago.  Seemed strong in the financial area, but weak in the manufacturing & planning areas.  Now with the move to RFID and UCC Net, we are concerned that FS is not moving fast enough.  How do you like one vs the other?

You are right on...  unfortunately the accountants pull the most wait around here for some unknown reason.

From my standpoint (implementation, customization, maintenance, et cetera) I like Navision much better.

another admin here,

was just looking for the FS login page on Google and found this post.

had an "LINE 108 NUMERIC FIELD ERROR" last night. Belive it's come up before, can't rember what it's about.

any way- what version's of FS did you run? We are still on 6.10.104 and can not see any reason to upgrade any further. We are quite content with what we have other than no barcode system for real time reporting.

We have looked at MadeToManage a few times- any comments on it?

We run 7.2 SQL FS

I too have looked at M2M but found it lacking in the MRP area.  I've been told they have beefed it up.

Navision financials look good & easy to use, but is weak in the manufacturing area.

Still looking for an MRP system with decent financials, good planning tools and adherence to ANSI/VICS/UCC standards that won't bankrupt the company.

I am a Fourth Shift Admin.  I have been working with the system since version 5.  The company I would for now recently upgraded to 7.2 SQL.

my theory- perfect mrp (or any software) does not exist, and if it did it would be a dead end market :)

but I did like the  M2M effort to tie sales to manufacturing, so one could run a cost to profit evaluation on every sales order.

my goals are to find a erp system that fits a make to inventory system and also, a job shop sales system with a large variable of product configurations, all that and throw in a sales price mutiplier that varies per quote, and is not based on a std. profit margin for each unit.

I'm not sure if we could have made it any more difficult.

What did you think of the 6.xx to 7.xx change? We are happy with the ver6. First thing I noticed on the knowledgebase after 7xx roll out was print issues. That info has not changed on the web site for several years now.

by: DRRYAN3Posted on 2004-02-18 at 21:32:03ID: 10399750

I was much happier with the V7 printing since I run a 5 site WAN and encourage users to use the network to send documents to the appropriate office instead of printing locally and then faxing.

I hated the time I had to spend using Titanium - what a nightmare.  Much happier with SQL Server where file structures cannot be hidden.  Now with 7.2 and the Foundation Business Views, FS has embraced this and made it easier to determine foreign keys, and extended field names make it easier to determine what they think they are storing in a given field.

I would like to find a system that supports the ANSI and VICS EDI standards for orders/invoices.  In other words, I don't like having to toss out a lot of information that comes in on an order because I don't have a place to put it.

I'd like a system by a company that supports emerging standards on a more timely basis.  For example, it took FS about 2 years from first mention of the VICS bill of lading by Target to support for same.  Now with UCCNet and Wal-Mart's RFID initiative, I am getting really worried.  There are also a lot of core issues they cannot manage to implement, such as consolidated bills of lading, single shipment to multiple customer IDs (even if the customers are under the same bill to ID), true multi-company configurations, etc.

I'd also like to be able to extend database schemas and incorporate those extensions into the screens my users see and use every day.  Fourth Shift bought into the whole browser as appropriate data entry vehicle way too much, in my opinon, with the NET-UI and later technologies.  A browser is fine for looking at web pages, but really sucks for heads down data entry.

So, HVYMTL, I tend to agree that "perfect" software isn't out there.  I wish I had the time and resources to write my own system.  Then it would be perfect, until we started using it.
