The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Transaction Codes for SAP Administration

Tags: SAP
Hi

I'm part of a SAP project whereby I'll be mainly doing SAP administration. I would like to know the transaction codes that would be useful to do the administration on a daily/weekly basis - monitoring of system/database performance, activity, users, workloads etc
eg of typical transaction codes would be st03, st06, db12, sm21 etc

Note the database is Oracle 10 while server OS is Solaris 10

any suggestion is welcome

thanks a lot apitbajpai:

the list is very comprehensive and useful
just 2 little questions:
1) A few of these t-codes are not working for me eg AL01, AL02. The system tells me that it does not exist. Do u have any idea why?

2) Is it possible for u to give some details regarding some of these t-codes as regards to what I should be looking into when I run them? eg ST03, ST06 etc
Can u propose some specific documentation regarding them

thanks

apitbajpai's list is aparently from a 4.x installation. Some of the codes will have new names, new functions, and some only exists in specific types of systems (BI, CRM, etc.)
That is quite common, and you generally have to make your own "cheatsheet" containing all of the transactions you needs, and what you should check: Daily, weekly, monthly, anually.
Examples of daily tasks:
 - Locked users/records
 - Cancelled jobs
 - System logs and dump
 - Check all systems are running
 - updates
 - archiving and backups are running (without errors)
 - performing transports

Weekly tasks might include:
 - Reading Oracle logs
 - Extending diskspace/tablespaces
 - Checking DB14 jobs
 - Adding OSS notes

Monthly tasks might include:
 - Analysing system performance
 - Setting new paramters
 - Applying support packages (usually once every 2 or 3 months is enough)
 - Reviewing schedules for batch, backup and data transfers
 - Reviewing EWAs

Annual tasks might include:
 - Reviewing EW
 - Allocating new resources to the system (hardware)
 - Recycling backup media

Then ofcourse depending on the system type, you need to allocate WORM drives, check java configurations and various RFC connections, running services and applications. A lot of this can easily be collected in the CCMS.

As for specifically what to look for.... Well, that depends on what kind of error you encounter. Normally, running the error against the slew of OSS notes available at http://service.sap.com/notes will give you a good idea. Posting here might give you some help. As for what actually CONSTITUES an error (ie. what IS bad performance), that's highly individual for most systems. However, reviewing some of the online course material might help a bit, as might some of the off the shelf SAP administration and/or basis books. But be advised, any information you get will always be subject to two very important variations which will likely make them inconsequential to your specific problem:
1) Information gets old FAST in this business. Any info source which is more than 6-8 months old (as most are), is likely wrong, as it no longer applies to a running system (assuming you update it regularly).
2) Your system is UNIQUE. NO matter how much you run as "standard", only YOUR system will have THIS EXACT use, plug ins, datatypes etc. Never assume that someone else will ofcourse have had the same problem before you. Ofcourse you can LIMIT the number of times you're "the first" by not being an early adopter, but that's usually a management choice, not an administration one.
