Thanks for the advice. My company is planning on sending me on the ADM100, ADM200 type courses. Do these match up with the TADM course content but not include the certification exam as part of it?
I guess what I really need to know if that if I go down the ADM path will it be possible for me to complete a certification using the materials in the course along with hands on experience?
This is the certification which I thought would fit best with my experience and environment: -
Certification - Technology Consultant - SAP NetWeaver´04 - SAP Web AS for ORACLE
Would you recommend this for me?
Thanks again.

Well, you dont REALLY need a consultant academy for just maintianing your own system, but it never hurts.
I'd go for the TADM series of courses: TADM10, TADM12, TADM51, TADM53 and TADMD5
There's also a certification to go with it.
Best bet for a "newbie" to start without a good tutor is to grab a book off the shelves at a bookstore near you. Basically any book about SAP and system administration is going to be obsolete by the time it's printed, but even obsolete, it does give you insights into what's possible and how (even though there may be better way to do things in newer version, you can normally still do things the oldfashioned way if you want, like transporting on the Unix level instead of via transaction STMS).
Start out by hitting a few transactions, figure out a simple list of daily/weekly/monthly administration tasks, expand on the tasks as you get better at performing them. SOMEONE must be doing something to your systems, or they'll be running REALLY slow REALLY fast if there's no administration being done.
