Question

SAP Basis newbie training/certification query

Asked by: mass2612

Hi all,

I have been offered a position working in our application team which will involve working in SAP Basis administration. I have some basic experience supprting SAP from the UNIX level such as managing file systems, starting/stopping the CI and app servers, managing printers, transports etc but not that much from within the SAP GUI.

I am looking for any recommendations for what topics I should be starting to read up on and any resources that are available. My collegue has attended the SAP classes and has many training manuals. I am also interested in certification (nobody at work is certified and they would like to change that) and obviously looking for some clear direction on the basics and where I can start for example I would like to become a SAP Certified Associate ASAP and then move onto the Certified Professional level down the road as I get more hands on experience.

Our environment is mySAP ERP 2005 (UNICODE which we just migrated to), Oracle 10g on HP-UX.

Thanks for your time.

Well, you dont REALLY need a consultant academy for just maintianing your own system, but it never hurts.
I'd go for the TADM series of courses: TADM10, TADM12, TADM51,  TADM53  and TADMD5
There's also a certification to go with it.

Best bet for a "newbie" to start without a good tutor is to grab a book off the shelves at a bookstore near you. Basically any book about SAP and system administration is going to be obsolete by the time it's printed, but even obsolete, it does give you insights into what's possible and how (even though there may be better way to do things in newer version, you can normally still do things the oldfashioned way if you want, like transporting on the Unix level instead of via transaction STMS).

Start out by hitting a few transactions, figure out a simple list of daily/weekly/monthly administration tasks, expand on the tasks as you get better at performing them. SOMEONE must be doing something to your systems, or they'll be running REALLY slow REALLY fast if there's no administration being done.

Thanks for the advice. My company is planning on sending me on the ADM100, ADM200 type courses. Do these match up with the TADM course content but not include the certification exam as part of it?

I guess what I really need to know if that if I go down the ADM path will it be possible for me to complete a certification using the materials in the course along with hands on experience?

This is the certification which I thought would fit best with my experience and environment: -
Certification - Technology Consultant - SAP NetWeaver´04 - SAP Web AS for ORACLE

Would you recommend this for me?

Thanks again.

yje ADM series of courses are also good, but these are for webAS, not the "old style" SAP systems. Ofcourse a lot of the stuff is identical, so this shouldn't pose a problem.
You can ofcourse take a certification in the webAS, but you'll need a couple of years of hands on before you can take the TADM certification without the courses.

Thanks for the info. Looking at the SAP site it appears that the TADM courses don't run here in Australia. Maybe the interest in them is not high enough.

I'm interested in certification as I'd like to learn as much as I can plus I would like to be able to take my skills elsewhere in the future and be productive in another SAP site so if there is any exam in particular that you think would benefit me please let me know.

Well, normally SAP are clever bastards... The certification is only valid as long as you're employed by the company that payed for the certification. Ofcourse most companies hiring dont care.... But just so you know.
If you want to shop around for work and jobs, I'd highly recommend the consultant training/certification.

Also note that it's not uncommon for certain regions and countries to no longer offer the "old" courses once the new ones are out. Even if they do not cover the same range of material. So if all you can get is webAS, then go for it. Ideally, all costumers should upgrade to webAS at some point n their product lifetime.
