Its difficult to answer your question because I'm not quite sure what your asking.  Can you be more specific?  What exactly is your goal?

Thanks Tommy. After my Master's in Information Systems, I started getting training in PeopleSoft CRM (3 yrs ago). After 6 months, due to some reasons moved to .NET (did some support, little programming). Later figured out i am not good in Programming, So moved to QA thinking that .NET knowledge would be an advantage. But landed in testing Datawarehouse applications (Cognos, Microsoft BI). I recently did a Contract in Microsoft's BI group. I am planning on moving towards Business Analyst now. Looking for positions in NY. Need help in preparation....

First off decide on your focus and what you enjoy.  I classify BA's into two types of roles, each requiring a distinct type of personality. Its sounds like you're looking for a process oriented focus but you absolutely need to be sure because many BA jobs are technical in nature.

Technically Oriented business analysts are comfortable extracting data from databases, text files, excel spreadsheets. They are can easily transfer information from one environment to another without compromising the integrity of the data. They are expert report writers. They don't mind writing scripts including SQL or VBA.

Process Oriented business analysts have will spend more time in Word and Visio and don't mind documenting and spending time improving processes.  They will spend more time interacting with others from around the business gathering requirements and translating those to functional specifications.  They may also spend a great deal of time validating and testing.

To prepare for these types of jobs, experience is very important, it provides a solid understanding of the SDLC and background in how various businesses function. So I'd start off my temping\contracting.  Even if you get a job doing data entry at least you'll have exposure to the business environment and corresponding processes. Also note that typically BAs are found at mid-to-large sized businesses.  The sheer size of data and information governance at corporations makes experience important.  Once you get in the door at a large business it will be easier to find other jobs. Until that time moving around at smaller shops through contract\temp work is a good way to go.  If you're turned off to temp work you can try interning.  Many very large corporations have internships at slightly lower rights and set amounts of time. Interning is a great way to get a feel for the large sized businesses and make excellent contacts and references.

Also when you say you got trained in PeopleSoft CRM was it functional or technical training in general (PS Tools)? In addition to Tommy's advise above, I would suggest to decide on what domain (CRM, HR, Supply Chain etc) and a specific business process ( Order Management, Inventory, Core HR, Recruiting, Lead to Cash etc) and get more knowledge in that area if you are heading in the direction of process oriented BA role. This will help you a lot when you have a good understanding of general practices in these processes.

You can also check with this link http://www.theiiba.org//AM/Template.cfm?Section=Home

This site has a ton of resources for Business Analysis and the job functions of this position.  I am a currently employed as a Business Analyst and you do where many hats.

As a BA I am constantly formulating requirement documentation, making recommendations on what type of technology to use, extracting information from hard to reach places like the minds of the busines owners.
