As noted above the DVD won't be bootable. To be able to use it you'd have restore the image to a new recovery partition on a new HD using the utility you used to back it up with. Also check the original partition's properties (Size etc.) and make sure the restored partition has the same or at least similar values.
I'd probably rather use DriveImageXML than the product you are using (I don't know that tool), it also creates xml files for the image, so it is probably compatible, but it has the advantage that it is included with UBCD4WIN, so you can restore it by booting your PC from that CD in case you need to do a recovery.

Iso files are usually images of CD's or DVD's, which most CD Writing tools know how to handle to burn them to CD's or DVD's, while xml files or files made by other imaging tools are very often legacy formats used by that particular tool, and are meant for HD's.

You can create backup image of Recovery partition but there is no guarantee that it will boot exactly to the same recovery environment as installed Recovery tool. Only CD created with recovery partition tool (the one on PC) will make it bootable. You can backup it with Macrium but I recommend you imaging MBR of the drive too as it contains the recovery tool boot manager.
Yes, you need to backup C: drive randomly to external HDD so to keep your backups up-to-date.
I am not quite familiar with Macrium Reflect and use Paragon Drive Backup for imaging of my workstations and home machines.
Look at Drive Backup 9: www.drive-backup.com
It also able to create recovery environment on your PC and let you recover from it when needed.
