Question

Problem setting up external Autodiscover in Exchange 2007

Asked by: DanielFGarcia

I've got Exchange 2007 up and running. Internal autodiscover works, Outlook anywhere works, I can send and receive emails etc. I've setup the dns name and bindings in IIS to support the https://autodiscover.mydomain.com/autodiscover/autodiscover.xml url. When I go to that URL it
* Asks me to logon
* Gives me the output...

  <?xml version="1.0" encoding="utf-8" ?>
- <Autodiscover xmlns="http://schemas.microsoft.com/exchange/autodiscover/responseschema/2006">
- <Response>
- <Error Time="16:24:13.7373545" Id="854507803">
  <ErrorCode>600</ErrorCode>
  <Message>Invalid Request</Message>
  <DebugData />
  </Error>
  </Response>
  </Autodiscover>

I have no idea if this is good or bad, but it least the url is responding.

My website is using a multi domain certificate that is using "Subject Alternative Name" (SAN). The CA that issued this certificate is trusted by my client machine.

When I go to setup a new outlook profile on a external machine, the following things happen...

- Click "Yes" to configure and email account
- I type in my name, email address and password then type next
- wait a bit... .... .... ....
- I get a login prompt where I type in my username in the form "NETBIOSNAME\username", enter my password, click remember my password then click OK
- wait a bit more... .... .... ....
- I then get the message "The connection to Microsoft Exchange is unavailable. Outlook must be online or connected to complete this action"
- When I click OK I get a dialog box with the exchange settings. The server name in that dialog box is the internal server address.

I found a knowledge base article that refers to this error (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/927481) but it refers to an exchange 2003 mailbox server. I only have 1 exchange server and it  is an exchange 2007 server

Start by testing the server using a test account and the Microsoft test site: https://testexchangeconnectivity.com/

Outlook autdiscover test worked 100% and the resultant XML file looked OK to me

Outlook Anywhere (RPC over HTTP)  failed, but that was because the SSL certificate wasn't trusted. This test didn't have an "ignore SSL trust" option.

synchronization, Notification, Availability, and OOF  test fails with "Object reference not set to an instance of an object.", looks like a problem with the test itself.

I tried running this test again, without doing the autodiscovery. and it now fails on

Doesn't look related to my current problem, but still good to know. (BTW this is a great tool, thank you)

Outlook Anywhere is not supported for use with self signed certificates - which is why there is no bypass SSL errors. You need to switch the self signed certificate for a commercial certificate.

I'm not using a self signed certificate.

I'm using a certificated that is issued by a CA that is trusted by my client PC, but not by the testexchangeconnectivity.com tool.

by: MesthaPosted on 2009-11-02 at 00:31:29ID: 25717768

The test connectivity site uses the same certificate repository that Microsoft supplies as default with its servers.
If you are using a certificate from another CA then you would need to import that everywhere, but it does unfortunately mean that you cannot use the best troubleshooting tool for this problem.

That is true, but I've already verified that outlook anywhere is working by actually using it. And I'm not sure how the error above is related to my problem.

Troubleshooting autodiscover is very difficult, which is why there is so much emphasis put on the test site from Microsoft. It takes most of the common problems and turns them in to something that can be understood.

The most common reason for autodiscover not working is the URL isn't configured correctly (so autodiscover.example.com doesn't resolve to the correct place) or a problem with the SSL certificate.
Autodiscover internally works in a different way, Outlook gets its information from the domain.

While they are linked, Outlook Anywhere and Autodiscover are actually two different things. Autodiscover tells Outlook how to configure itself, including the settings for Outlook Anywhere. However it is possible to bypass autodiscover for the initial configuration by putting the information in manually. That doesn't help though, because Outlook 2007 makes regular calls on autodiscover to ensure the information is still correct, and autodiscover is also used for the availability service.

The only thing I can suggest is that you run the email auto-configuration test from Outlook (hold down ctrl while right clicking on the Outlook icon) and see what that shows. You only need to enable the first option, the second two will fail.

OK, I figured out what it was. Apparently you need to disable IPv6 on the Server. It isn't enough to disable it from the network adapter. You need to disable it in accordance with KB929852.
