Sudden degradation of database performance

We have experienced a sudden degradation in the performance of our client database; routine activities are taking about four times (4x) longer to complete than before. This appeared suddenly with no obvious cause.

The application is a Paradox 7 database operating on a HP Proliant running Server 2003. Our workstations are Pentium 4's w XP.

Please do not waste time criticizing our choice of Paradox, it has been serving our needs for eight years and we are in the process of designing and developing a replacement application. We need only keep our existing app running for another six months or so.

The issue is, that without any known change to our hardware, software or dataset what took 15 seconds before now takes a minute or more, reports that took 7 minutes now take a half-hour, nighttime processing that took 30 minutes now takes 3.5 hours, etc&.

We have done the following with out success:

Rebuilt the major tables and indexes;

Archived old, inactive data off the live system reducing the Services table from 900,000+ records to 680,000 records.

Varied the number of users from one to four (typical)

Looked for unusual LAN activity or bottlenecks.
