Question

How to start server 2003 in safe mode?

Asked by: wingcat

I have a HP Prolient ML110 Server which reboots prior to getting the login screen. I have tried starting in safe mode and all the other options available to me at the screen including the command prompt, but the same thing happens. I only restarted the system after I uninstalled my Mcafee antivirus to upgrade to a new Symantic.

The system appears to have a normal startup and I do not see any error messages. The grey bar is present and followed by the server 2003 screen. Then the screen turns grey, like it should, and flashes and reboots the system. The cycle continues.

Does anyone know how to solve this?

It has the actual software installed (not imaged) and the server acts as our file server in the school. It handles the user accounts and domain so I'm a little concerned about data being lost. I'm thinking it's something small because we really didn't do much. The only problem was that some complained about the terminal server being slow so I was in the process of updating to a new antivirus. The first step was uninstalling the old and rebooting...

This is a little out of my territory so I'm hoping I'm answering what you want.

I have tried booting to the last known config. Same thing happens - boots on the login screen.

Would I alter anything if I ran a repair with the server 2003 disc?

by: wingcatPosted on 2008-12-30 at 06:13:19ID: 23262600

I have already tried all the options listed under the f8 menu. All produce the same result.

This obviously was caused by software(symantec) installed, and it's none of business with disk. my recommend is use WinPE or Server 2003 media boot the server, and use command to set the symantec service start mode to disabled:
sc config <service_name> start=disabled.
then restart the server.

Does anyone know how to run a repair on the OS? I did boot to the media and it says that no drives were found. We are running an array and everythings starts fine and it does locate it. Do I use the same process or do I do something different?

You need get the arry controller drive. during start of WinPE or Windows Media boot the server, presss F6, and follwowing the screen, put the drive in. then it would know the disk.
Sometimes the disk problem will caused system reboot, after WinPE start, you can try to  use command  "chkdsk"  to check and repair logical disk, then reboot the server.
