Question

What's a good Sybase Client

I have worked entirely with Oracle databases in the past, so I have used PLSQL Developer to access the database. I will now be working with a Sybase Version 12 database and I have no client software to access it. I have searched the internet and I have no idea how to get up and running. Anyone know of an easy to use graphical client I could use? (I'm hoping for a Sybase equivalent of PLSQL Developer!!)

In the installation of Sybase there are the utilities "Sybase Central" and "Interactive SQL" for operate with your DB.

The best product I know you can use is DB Artisan, that is the one that I use. Sybase does not currently have anything closer to Query Analizer, or PLSQL.

Apparently you are using ASE not ASA. Sybase Open Client includes SQL Advantage which is very similar to Query Ananlyzer (I am not sure which one has more functionality, SQL Advantage may have more). You need to install Sybase Open Client on Windows and configure your Server(s) by dsedit to connect to your server(s). You can also start SQL Advantage from Sybase Central.

I don't have anything to do with Sybase installed on my machine. The only information I have is:

1. The ip of the machine
2. The port number
3. The name of the database
4. The DBMS is Sybase (version 11.9...)
5. UserID and Password

I installed DB Artisan and I've used that to log in to the Oracle Databases that I have accounts on (DB Artisan seems to pick up all the entries from my tnsnames.ora file). I'm thinking I need to get some software from sybase, any further ideas?!?!

just download from sybase website - search for jdbc drivers.

it should me mentioned in the minq.se website as well.

I think you need to load Sybase Open Client in either way. Ask your DBA's for the CD, if you don't have one.

I downloaded jconnect from the Sybase site and used the jconn2.jar drivers. Still can't gain access. Think some of my info about the database is wrong. Going to get onto the DBA's. Thanks for all your help. Anyone kknow where I could get the Sybase Version 11 drivers (v 3.11.00.01)? Can't find them anywhere.

I have test doing the same with a workstation and I faild to connect to sybase using only ODBC. I believe the only way you can connect to Sybase is installing the Open Client. Your Sybase DBA should have a copy of it.

Ok - I had the wrong port number so I got in fine now with DBVisualizer and jisql.
