Most versions of Sybase ASE ship with a Getting Started Guide in hardcopy. Oddly I don't seem to be able to find soft copy of that on the Sybase site.

It's hard to know where to point you if you're starting from zero like this.
It's actually up to the client tool you use to connect to ASE as to how to terminate commands. If you're using the built-in command-line "isql" tool, you terminate each batch of SQL with "go" on a line of its own with no leading whitespace:
select * from [...]
go
