Question

Need help finding ODBC driver for Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere 9.0

Asked by: clynch302

I'm looking for an ODBC driver to connect to a Sybase Adaptive Server Anywhere 9.0 database from an XP based system.  Anyone out there have any recommendations on a solution that is preferably free, or otherwise, not too expensive?

Thanks in advance.

If you are licensed for ASA 9, you will find the ODBC drivers on the distribution.  Not muss, no fuss, no extra $.

Bill

I have the distribution disks and have installed the ODBC drivers, but they don't appear to work as I expect.  They want to start the database and seem to operate in somewhat of an exclusive mode.  In my case, the database is already open by another application, I just want to query some data from it.  Do you have any suggestions on what I might change with the Sybase drivers or other drivers that would work better?

It is not a driver problem, it is either the version of ASA and/or the mechanism by which it is being started.  There is a remote possibility that you have a network configuration issue as well.

There is a "personal" version of ASA which is designed to support a single user collocated on a desktop machine.  If that is what you are using, you won't have much success trying to attach a second user on a different machine to it.  Are the multiple users hitting this database now?

Next, even if you have the full "server" version of ASA, you want to start it up as a service (assuming Windows)  rather than rely on the ODBC driver to start it.  The option to have the ODBC driver start the database server on demand only works when the client and server are on the same platform.

Next, you need to look at the network parameters you are starting the database server with.  As an aside, ASA is a real live database, not a shared file system.  The only way to access the database is by running the engine and connecting to that engine.  The engine starts up and listens on an IP address and port.  A common mistake is having the "server" machine have a dynamically assigned address.  This makes it pretty difficult to find the server from client machines.  Next, I have seen situations where somebody use only the Windows machine name in the configuration instead of an IP address.  Windows name resolution is flakey on a good day and is not a reliable way to address a database server.  If you have a DNS server, you can use that name but don't rely on Windows Naming to do it for you.  Finally, I have seen a few cases where the database server was setup to listen on IP addr 127.0.0.1; the loopback address.  The problem is that the loopback address is only available on the local machine so you are forever prevent from seeing it on the network.

Assuming you don't have network configuration problems, once you get the database engine started as a service, there is a mechanism in ASA that allows the client drivers to find the database engine on the network by dbsrvr (not machine) name.

Best of luck,
Bill

Thank you a ton for taking the time to respond and you solved my problem.  I needed to start the db server as a service.  Once I did that, the rest fell into place.

Thanks again.
