Question

Sybase connection problem

Asked by: davidw88

Hi experts,

I installed pymssql-0.8.0 and freetds-0.82 and my Ubuntu platform and all seemed fine. A sybase is on a server in a remote place.

From my test results I see that I could connect to Sybase with "tsql" on
prompt no matter if I use "freetds.conf" or not. However, if I use Python
script as attached,  then I got

File "/var/lib/python-support/python2.5/pymssql.py", line 328, in connect
con = _mssql.connect(dbhost, dbuser, dbpasswd)
_mssql.error: DB-Lib error message 20009, severity 9:
Unable to connect: Adaptive Server is unavailable or does not exist
Net-Lib error during Operation now in progress
Error 115 - Operation now in progress

Anybody knows how to fix this? Why did the "tsql" work on shell prompt however the Python script did not?

import pymssql

con=pymssql.connect(dsn='sybase-sever.mycompany.com', user='sa', password='',host="12.12.12.12",database='db-name')

I can also use "isql" to connect to Sybase.

Why does the Python script not work? Any ideas?

Thanks so much.

Are you sure you're using the right tool? Those error messages make it look like you're using a library intended for MS SQL Server...

Also your connection properties don't seem to have enough detail. If you're connecting by address then you also have to specify a port on the host, not just the host.

by: mish33Posted on 2009-09-11 at 07:46:46ID: 25310049

You need to install Python library for Sybase (pymssql will not do). See http://wiki.python.org/moin/Sybase for your options.

Thanks experts for your replies. I put a port number after host and tested again.

con=pymssql.connect('', user='sa', password='',host="12.12.12.12:5000",database='db-name')

I got

  File "/var/lib/python-support/python2.5/pymssql.py", line 328, in connect
    con = _mssql.connect(dbhost, dbuser, dbpasswd)
_mssql.error: Could not set connection properties

Python lib is already installed on my machine. Let me read the link that mish33 gave.

Any more ideas or clues?

Thanks again.

Per the other answer you've already been given, you're using the wrong libraries.

Adm just installed ASE 15 for me. The lib is in /usr/local/sybase, however I still get the same connection problem. what's wrong?

by: Joe_WoodhousePosted on 2009-09-11 at 20:42:55ID: 25314976

You still seem to be using pymssql. This is the python library for MS SQL, as the name suggests. You need the driver for Sybase. For Sybase ASE, it is called, you'll never guess, python-sybase. :)

It's all there in the link you've already been given in the answer already given by mish33. Try it.

Thanks experts.

I installed python-sybase-0.39 already. So the library is correct.

This link http://packages.ubunut.com/intrepid/python/python-pymssql says that pymysql can also connect Sybas

I tried Java JDBC and it worked. So I gave up Python module. I use Java now.

Thanks again.
