Backup a Sybase database without dropping the database?

Currently we have an old Alpha server running Sybase as a data warehouse. The database currently gets dropped once a week so that a dump can be performed for backup purposes. Is there a way to backup the database reliably that does not require dropping the database?

Which Sybase product and version?

I am very puzzled because as far as I know, all three server-class Sybase database products have been able to take online backups for every version going back a dozen years...

Your question makes me think that your "backup" involves copying underlying files? If that's correct you should be aware that this has never been supported by Sybase for Sybase IQ or Sybase ASA, and has only become supported in relatively recent versions of Sybase ASE - and even then only when you do certain things.

Can you tell us more about exactly what Sybase product this is, and more details about how these "backups" are currently being taken?
