i have a query output from a table in access,whats the best way i can assure that te format of the data in access is carried accross to excel,it literally has to be an mirror image
if i copy to exacel straight fromt he query i get "squares" and strange formats

Instead of running the query to an grid, right-click on the query name export to xls format. Also, access has a TransferSpreadsheet action that allows you to automate the same thing from a macro or vba code.

great but doesnt it ensure the exact data format to be carried over?

Does it have to be excel? Can u export to alternatives? eg Snapshot reports
failing that, u could use Excel automation, copy the recordset then apply the formatting yourself

You want an exact image, not a mirror image - in which everything is reversed;-) - Oh well, what's in a word. Can you post a some of the 'strange' characters that you get from the Access query - from a memo field?
