Restore/re-attach of MSDB to a recovered server

We had a major disaster and have to fully recover a server from scratch.  The original database server had been running for some years.  Now users are very interested in retaining existing SQL packages.

The server will be re-initialized with new copy of OS (Windows 2K Enterprise), and SQL Server 7.0 Enterprise re-installed (it's an older server).

Q:
Once that is done, can I take a copy of the old MSDB .MDF and .LDF files, retained from the original server, and use them to replace the MSDB that gets built when SQL is installed.  I hope to detach and re-attach MSDB.  Will that work?  Will that cause errors?  Can I do this just long enough to extract copies of the packages?

I will award at least 750 points for a sound resolution, but it won't let me put that many points directly only the question.

There quite a good MS knowledge base article that may also help. It's about moving msdb e.t.c. to a different server so probably applies to your situation... Q224071
