Reinstalling SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Edition

Hi there!

From another posting of mine at EE I got the following advice:

"... our issue is that you have installed SQL Server 2005 Enterprise Ed on this XP box but you do not have a local instance (from everything that you have given me I would say it was skipped during installation, but that is just a guess)."

My question is: how should I proceed properly?

Control Panel > Add/Remove Programs > Uninstall it   and then simply installing it as if "first time"  would be my approach.

Please say if that´s ok or if there is something else or additional that I should do to avoid future problems or improper installation.

Thanks,
fskilnik.

Thanks for this additional help.

>> First, before uninstalling - run the install 2005 - you should be able to create another instance

I could not. Nothing asked was related to this and the options I thought I did not ask to install the first time... were there, because at the next installation phases the system accused all of the options clicked are already installed.

>> Did you have SQL 2000 on the box already?

No. I had my HD formatted before many "recent" installations, SQL Server 2005 included.

>> When I have re-installed SQL Server 2005 I have had to uninstall the previous 2005 installation - yes, use the add/remove programs. I uninstalled 2005 and the sql native client (just to be on the safe side). I did not uninstall VS.

I will do as you did.  Thanks a lot,  Fábio.

Feedback (for ptjcb and interested readers) :

You were absolutely right, ptjcb!  I re-installed SQL Server 2005, following your instructions (also unistalling sql native client and not unistalling VStudio) and now I see (and use satisfactory) the Server connection, not (only) the SQLExpress one.  Thanks a lot. Now things are working as expected, even the Database Tuning Advisor!  :)
Very cool. Sometimes there is nothing you can do but re-install it. We had several people convert their hard drives from FAT32 to NTFS and SQL 2005 stopped working. I tried several things and ended up re-installing (which is why I know what to uninstall) and they work well now.
