The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

convert long raw into varchar2 data type in oracle 8i

Tags: oracle, long, convert, raw
hi experts:

in our ERP system, there is a table ( table name: NOTATION ) in which  one column named NOTE ( data type LONG RAW ).

SQL> desc notation;
 Name                                      Null?    Type
 ----------------------------------------- -------- ----------------------------
 TYPE                                      NOT NULL CHAR(2)
 OWNER_ID                                  NOT NULL VARCHAR2(40)
 CREATE_DATE                               NOT NULL DATE
 NOTE                                               LONG RAW

the content in NOTE column can be displayed in ERP, but I want display this NOTE in Crystal Report, the content of NOTE will not show in Crystal Report, so I hope to covert this LONG RAW data type into VARCHAR2. As I should not make any change to current NOTE column, so do I have to create a VIEW based on NOTATION table ? and how to convert the current LONG RAW data type ( data exist in NOTE column ) into VARCHAR2 data type?

thanks

We had a similar need, so I wrote the functions below and put them in a package.

You can then call the function in a view or just as you need it.

select  OLE_OBJECT_ID,
        OLE_OBJECT_TYPE,
        ppadm.textrawio.tidblobchar(rowid) OLE_OBJECT_BLOB,
        GEN_ARG,
        TIME_STAMP
  from tidblob
 where ole_object_type = 'T'

The rowid of the row with the long raw data you want to convert is passed in.  The long raw is converted to hex and then the hex is converted to characters.

Obviously you have the size limitation of the varchar2 to worry about.

  FUNCTION hextonum(v_hex VARCHAR2) RETURN NUMBER
  IS
    hex          VARCHAR2(1);
    num          NUMBER;
    num1         NUMBER;
    num2         NUMBER;
  BEGIN
    hex := SUBSTRB(v_hex,1,1);

    IF ( hex >= '0' and hex <= '9' ) THEN
      num1  := TO_NUMBER(hex);
    END IF;
    IF hex = 'A' THEN num1 := 10; END IF;
    IF hex = 'B' THEN num1 := 11; END IF;
    IF hex = 'C' THEN num1 := 12; END IF;
    IF hex = 'D' THEN num1 := 13; END IF;
    IF hex = 'E' THEN num1 := 14; END IF;
    IF hex = 'F' THEN num1 := 15; END IF;

    hex := SUBSTRB(v_hex,2,1);

    IF ( hex >= '0' and hex <= '9' ) THEN
      num2  := TO_NUMBER(hex);
    END IF;
    IF hex = 'A' THEN num2 := 10; END IF;
    IF hex = 'B' THEN num2 := 11; END IF;
    IF hex = 'C' THEN num2 := 12; END IF;
    IF hex = 'D' THEN num2 := 13; END IF;
    IF hex = 'E' THEN num2 := 14; END IF;
    IF hex = 'F' THEN num2 := 15; END IF;

    num := (num1*16)+num2;
    RETURN num;
  END;

  FUNCTION tidblobchar(v_object_id char) RETURN VARCHAR2

  -- This function converts the long raw column of TIDBLOB to
  -- its character representation for manipulation.
  -- It can only be called for an object type of T.

  IS
    raw_data          LONG RAW;
    rawlen            NUMBER;
    hex_data          VARCHAR2(32760);
    char_data         VARCHAR2(32760);
    loop_counter      NUMBER;
  BEGIN

    -- Get the blob using the rowid passed in.
    -- Will always retrun only one row.

    SELECT ole_object_blob
      INTO raw_data
      FROM tidblob
     WHERE v_object_id = rowid;

    -- Convert the raw data to hex.
    hex_data := rawtohex(raw_data);
    rawlen := length(hex_data);

    loop_counter := 1;

    -- Loop through and convert the hex to characters.
    WHILE loop_counter <= rawlen LOOP
        char_data := char_data || CHR(HEXTONUM(SUBSTRB(hex_data,loop_counter,2)));
        loop_counter := loop_counter + 2;
    END LOOP;

    RETURN char_data;
  END;

thanks mszacik

as I am not developer, I really do not understand how to use this function.

would you please explaine more about the usage of this function?

thanks

We have a table named TIDBLOB

Here is the description of the table.

 Name                                      Null?    Type
 ----------------------------------------- -------- ----------------------------
 OLE_OBJECT_ID                             NOT NULL CHAR(12)
 OLE_OBJECT_TYPE                           NOT NULL CHAR(1)
 OLE_OBJECT_BLOB                                    LONG RAW
 GEN_ARG                                   NOT NULL NUMBER(38)
 TIME_STAMP                                NOT NULL CHAR(26)

The column ole_object_blob is a long raw data type.  In some cases the data is just text (indicated by a 'T' in the ole_object_type column).  In those cases, if I call the function it will return text data.

So my select statement looks like this:

1  select  OLE_OBJECT_ID,
2        OLE_OBJECT_TYPE,
3         tidblobchar(rowid) OLE_OBJECT_BLOB,
4          GEN_ARG,
5         TIME_STAMP
6    from tidblob
7  where ole_object_type = 'T'

Line 3 calls the function.  It passes in the rowid of the row with the value you want converted.  The function converts the long raw to varchar2 and returns it.  That is what you see in your select statement.  You can call this function anywhere - in a view or prcedure etc.

Just create these functions as functions or parts of a package in Oracle.

If you have access log in to SQL Plus and run this sql

CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE TEXTRAWIO
  IS

  FUNCTION hextonum(v_hex varchar2) return number;

  FUNCTION tidblobchar(v_object_id char) RETURN VARCHAR2;

END; -- Package Specification TEXTRAWIO

CREATE OR REPLACE PACKAGE BODY textrawio
AS

  FUNCTION hextonum(v_hex VARCHAR2) RETURN NUMBER
  IS
    hex          VARCHAR2(4);
    num          NUMBER;
    num1         NUMBER;
    num2         NUMBER;
  BEGIN
    hex := SUBSTRB(v_hex,1,1);

    IF ( hex >= '0' and hex <= '9' ) THEN
      num1  := TO_NUMBER(hex);
    END IF;
    IF hex = 'A' THEN num1 := 10; END IF;
    IF hex = 'B' THEN num1 := 11; END IF;
    IF hex = 'C' THEN num1 := 12; END IF;
    IF hex = 'D' THEN num1 := 13; END IF;
    IF hex = 'E' THEN num1 := 14; END IF;
    IF hex = 'F' THEN num1 := 15; END IF;

    hex := SUBSTRB(v_hex,2,1);

    IF ( hex >= '0' and hex <= '9' ) THEN
      num2  := TO_NUMBER(hex);
    END IF;
    IF hex = 'A' THEN num2 := 10; END IF;
    IF hex = 'B' THEN num2 := 11; END IF;
    IF hex = 'C' THEN num2 := 12; END IF;
    IF hex = 'D' THEN num2 := 13; END IF;
    IF hex = 'E' THEN num2 := 14; END IF;
    IF hex = 'F' THEN num2 := 15; END IF;

    num := (num1*16)+num2;
    RETURN num;
  END;

  FUNCTION tidblobchar(v_object_id char) RETURN VARCHAR2

  -- This function converts the long raw column of TIDBLOB to
  -- its character representation for manipulation.
  -- It can only be called for an object type of T.

  IS
    raw_data          LONG RAW;
    rawlen            NUMBER;
    hex_data          VARCHAR2(32760);
    char_data         VARCHAR2(32760);
    loop_counter      NUMBER;
  BEGIN

    -- Get the blob using the rowid passed in.
    -- Will always retrun only one row.

    SELECT ole_object_blob
      INTO raw_data
      FROM tidblob
     WHERE v_object_id = rowid;

    -- Convert the raw data to hex.
    hex_data := rawtohex(raw_data);
    rawlen := length(hex_data);

    loop_counter := 1;

    -- Loop through and convert the hex to characters.
    WHILE loop_counter <= rawlen LOOP
        char_data := char_data || CHR(HEXTONUM(SUBSTRB(hex_data,loop_counter,2)));
        loop_counter := loop_counter + 2;
    END LOOP;

    RETURN char_data;
  END;

END;
/

Then your sql call will look like this

1  select  OLE_OBJECT_ID,
2        OLE_OBJECT_TYPE,
3         textrawio.tidblobchar(rowid) OLE_OBJECT_BLOB,
4          GEN_ARG,
5         TIME_STAMP
6    from tidblob
7  where ole_object_type = 'T'

I added the name of the package to line 3.
