TNS-12560 protocol adapter error from client (Oracle developer 6i) / TNS 12571 error
We have many client machines (oracle developer 6i installed which has Oracle 8i client) suddenly stopping connections to the database (Oracle 9i). tnsnames.ora is fine, because it used to connect before. I can ping to the database host, but when doing tnsping80 to the tns entry it is giving TNS-12560 protocol adapter error or TNS 12571 packet writer failure. I tried to re-install Oracle, but no use. Finally we have to re-intsall win2K/Win XP and install Oracle Dev 6i again to solve the problem.
Please give advice.

Even with developer 6i rel. 2 (for xp) and patch 15, the problem was not solved.

I could not find a solution in Metalink. They say that some spyware can cause this error. So you may install a program to clear spyware and try again.

One of the things we are seeing lately, is that the different "spyware" software products are causing problems with oracle connections.
These products are getting installed on peoples computers without the end-users consent or knowledge. It happens as there result of the end-user going to some website that is using this tool to gather information about the end-user's cruising habits.
The solution is to uninstall the spyware program and add a tool that will keep these tools from being installed or enables.
If everything was working and suddenly stops, this is were I would start.
The next step is ask what changed and start working backward from there. Other things to check, are is the a firewall between the client and the server? If so did someone change the firewall configuration. Is there a hardware failure on this one client.

Recently we got 1 case of each error on Win XP PCs in remote sites. They are not connected to internet.
There is a firewall between client and server, but other PCs in the site are able to access the server. We brought the PC to IT, where server is located and gave a local IP, but still the problem was there.
I re-installed oracle developer 6i rel.2 for XP, installed the patch 15, but of no use. So we had to format the PC as usual.
In another remote site, when we got ORA-12560 error, we restarted the PC and logged in as different domain user. Then it got connected, again we logged in as the first domain user again it connected.

I am not sure it will be usefull but have you tried to start a sql trace? In oracle home under net80\admin there's a file named sqlnet.ora. If you set below parameters, it provides you a detailed sql trace;
trace_level_client = 16
trace_file_client = d:\dev\cli.trc
connect to the database and examine the cli.trc file.

do all clients get this error? Developer6i patch13 is certified against a oracle9i database. Which patch do you have?
