The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

Sqlnet.ora gives the name resolution directives (default domain and such).  If NAMES.DIRECTORY_PATH is (tns_names.ora, ....) then the file must reflect your enviroment.  You can use the net wizard to help you with the configuration, and test the connectivity with tnsping <instance|sid|service_name>.

Also, in the pfile, check that there is no naming confusion between service_name, SID and instance name.  Keep them the same untill you know what you are dealing with.

You may also need to set the ORACLE_SID environment variable.

thanks for the reply, I install and create database on drive c:\oracle and developer suite on drive d:\oracle9ids. When I use tnsping <sid> in my case "testdb" it goes to check in drive d: path, instead it shoud go to check in drive c:\oracle\network\admin\sqlnet.ora , the path where database software is installed.

So, when I use tnsping command it gives me the following error. I also checked my parameter file , its okay..cause i can log in using sqlplus sign on window like scott/tiger@testdbnet, it works fine.

waiting for further action....

exhibit of tnsping command :

Doest this work:
connect /@testdbnet as sysdba

06.11.2003 at 08:34AM PDT, ID: 8700690
yes, it works with

SQL> conn / @testdbnet as sysdba
Connected.
SQL>
SQL>
SQL> show user
USER is "SYS"

but, why its not connecting without host string, more strange to me , when i use  "tnsping testdb", why it goes to check in the developer folder path rather then in the database folder path which is in different logical drive, as i mentioned before in this dicussion.

Please help me to resolve this problem...

thanks
Obaid.

>>why it goes to check in the developer folder
This has to do with the Oracle Homes "thing".
You have installed the database in say OraHome90, and the Developer Software in OraHomeDVP. This means that you have 2 Oracle Homes, each having it's own tns resolution file(s) ie tnsnames.ora
To solve this issue, you have to set the Registry Setting TNS_ADMIN (in the oracle development home) to point to the same path as the database home.
TNS_ADMIN contains to the path that holds the file tnsnames.ora.
If this is NOT set, the value %ORACLE_HOME%\network\admin is used instead (for oracle 8 this folder was called %ORACLE_HOME%\net80\admin).
This settings is in the following registry folder:
HKLM\Software\Oracle\
-> Check the ALL_HOMES folder which homes you have, typically ID0 is the database home, and ID1 is the developers home.
-> in the HOME0/HOME1 (whichever is relevant), check if you have the Value TNS_ADMIN, if not create it (with type REG_SZ), and the value needs to point to the path where the "good" tnsnames.ora is contained.

>>why its not connecting without host string
see above

thanks angelIII, you have been so helpful so far for me.. now after making changes in registery to set up TNS_ADMIN then i tried again.. it gives me the following result.. this time of course the path has been changed, but there is one error " TNS-03505: Failed to resolve name ".

Could you please tell me now what is the reason for that error, how can i remove it, where this error could make me a problem.. thanks..

waiting for response

You can open and edit file tnsnames.ora from c:\oracle\network\admin\tnsnames.ora
by use notepad and check hostname.(HOST = Computername)

Hi,
You should configure your listener in Net configuration Assistant. And then your TNSLISTENER service will start.

03.22.2004 at 07:34PM PST, ID: 10654848
I had this
    ERROR: ORA-12532: TNS:invalid argument
and I tried all of the above to fix it.  Nothing worked. At the same time, tnsping did work fine!
After I commented out the "dispatcher" line in init<SID>.ora and restarted, the connection
    sqlplus username@sid
worked fine.
Was it because oracle installs multithreaded server configuration by default?  Possible.

Sergei.

If
      sqlplus username/password@sid
works, but
      sqlplus username
does not, that means your ORACLE_SID variable is not set.

Form DOS prompt, issue the command
      set oracle_sid=testdb
After that,
      sqlplus username
should work.

Regards,

Sergei.

goto services (control panel  ----administration tools --- services)
change oracle listener owner (must be oracle user)
