Hi Irv899,

Hope this helps ....

You can delete all the desktop.ini files safely regardless of where it is located. desktop.ini files usually come along with a virus folder.htt.

If folder.htt file exists in your hard disk other than in the Program Files directory (folder.htt usually exists in this dir but this one is not a virus), then there is a sure possibility of your hard disk being infected by this virus.

There is a way of getting rid of this in Win 9x. Do the following steps ...

> Search and delete all folder.htt and dektop.ini files on your comp.
> In the Run command of Win execute "msconfig" command.
> Click on the startup tab.
> Check if kernel32 is listed against your
                   C:\Windows\System\kernel.dll
> Uncheck the item corresponding to the above detail.
> Then Search and delete kernel.dll (Located in C:\Windows\System)      after restarting your system.

Merry Christmas...

I'm running win2k sp4.  I found folder.htt in the following folders:

C:\WINNT\folder.htt
C:\WINNT\system32\folder.htt
C:\WINNT\Web\folder.htt

As well as at least 38 desktop.ini files on my c drive.

Can I delet all of the folder.htt files (folders) as well as the desktop.ini files safely?
Hi  Irv899,

You can delete all the folder.htt and desktop.ini files safely but even after deleting them they       will replicate on your system.

The steps that I have given will work in your OS also. Replace the Windows folder by WINNT.

Do not forget to delete the kernel.dll file. (It is safe to delete kernel.dll as kernel32.dll is       the original kernel)

Also do not forget to check out the kernel.dll in msconfig.
To invoke msconfig follow the steps mentioned in my previous msg.

Feel free to ask more questions ...

Kernel.dll is nowhere on my system.

What exactly does the folder.htt do (MS says it was installed with ie4), and what effect will deleting the desktop.ini files have.

thanx!
Hi Irv899,
The folder.htt is a folder template file which contains the info about how a folder is structured.(htt is acronym for Hyper Text Template).
When IE4 is installed the folder.htt file is stored in the C:\Program Files directory. This file is harmless.
Hi Irv899,
Did you solve the problem ??
If you encounter any problem pls post it here ...
I'll try to solve it ...
Happy New Year

Oh, too late...  or not?!

I used to get a lot of desktop.ini files, and I deleted them with great ease.  No adware/spyware/virus scans found anything pertaining to desktop.ini files except for tracking bugs, which somehow manipulated my desktop.ini files to store things.  That was on an old machine that I tore apart and laughed insanely all the while.

Thank you,
