How to replace carriage return in notes field?

I have a table with a notes field of varchar(255). I have created a view of the table to convert the varchar to a char field for fixed lenght bcp out. The problem lies in that the notes field is full of carriage returns. In oracle you can use the replace function. ie
select
replace(notes,chr(10),' ')
from custnotes
Since the ascii character for carriage return is 10 this will replace the cr with a space.

My bcp out of the current table provides mulitple line outputs for the rows in the table that have the carriage return in the notes column. I need to replace the cr so that each output line in the bcp out is only one line for each row.

I haven't found any good solutions for this issue in Sybase. I have seen some examples using the stuff function, but really couldn't understand the solution. Any help is greatly appreciated.
