The Solution Rating System

With so many solutions, how can you tell which solutions are most likely to help you and which ones are not? To provide you with a tool to use, we rate our solutions based on various elements that most accurately determine if a solution is a quality solution. To explain what factors affect the solution rating, here are the elements we take into consideration when formulating our solution rating.

  • The Grade of the Solution
  • The Zone Rank of the Expert Providing the Solution
  • The Number of Author and Expert Comments
  • The Number of Experts Contributing
  • The Feedback of the Community

Your Input Matters
Because of the way the system is set up, the most important variable in this equation is you. As a member of Experts Exchange, you are able to cast your vote on the quality of the solutions in regard to how complete, accurate, helpful and easy to understand each solution is. When you provide your feedback, each rating is adjusted accordingly. So, if you see a solution that has a poor rating that you think is a good solution, let us know by rating it. As you do, the rating will be adjusted and will become more accurate for other members of our site.

If you have any suggestions that you would like to make for our rating system, please ask a question in the Suggestions Zone of Community Support.

Thank you!

SQL Server 2008 Transaction Log - Reduce Size

Asked by Wizard_IT in MS SQL Server, SQL Server 2008

Tags: microsoft, sql server, 2008

I have a database called "technical support"
This has a log file called "TechnicalSupport2K_log"
The database is around 250MB but the log file is 6.5GB
Each night I run a backup command to overwrite the backup file as follows (5 routines for Mon - Fri)

BACKUP DATABASE [Technical Support] TO  DISK = N'E:\DATA-SQL\WIZARDSQL\Backup\tsmonday.sql' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT,  NAME = N'Technical Support_backup_2008_08_22_095437_5682842', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD,  STATS = 10

Each Night I run a Main Plan that checks everything except the backup sections

Each Saturday I want to clear down the log files
I have tried a few different versions from SQL 2000 posts and so on but each appears to fail in 2008

The first part of my Saturday routine is

BACKUP LOG [Technical Support] TO  DISK = N'E:\DATA-SQL\WIZARDSQL\Backup\tslog.sql' WITH NOFORMAT, INIT,  NAME = N'Technical Support_backup_2008_08_22_095658_9234183', SKIP, REWIND, NOUNLOAD,  STATS = 10

Then I want to clear down the log files
The latest attempt I have is

use "technical support"
go
dump transaction "Technical Support" with no_log
go
DBCC SHRINKFILE ('TechnicalSupport2K_log', 100)
GO

Can someone please let me know where I am going wrong and rite the correct code to clear down my log files

Thanks in advance
