DAO app to use a different DB

Hello

I have an old application written in VB6 / DAO 3.6 which uses an Access 2000 DB. The access database works great with this program even if it is opened as a shared file by 20 or 30 users at the same time.

However, a few users want to open the database remotely over internet. Some have tried using a VPN but it is very slow and the mdb file is easily damaged so I would like to change the database engine to a true client/server environment but without the cost of rewriting the whole program / DAO calls. I can rewrite part of the code if necessary but I would like to change as little as possible.

Is something like this possible? Is there any database that I can use almost as an Access database through DAO remotely? Or any DAO replacement to use with the same API (just dll replacement).
